Slow speed with new modem

I have MediaCom internet access at home.
I have rented my modem for 10 years. (Modem is an RCA DCM215)
For about six years the rental was $4.00 per month.
For the last four it has been $3.00 per month.
Doing the math that is over $500.00 rental on the modem.
I noticed on Newegg that a Linksys Modem ...

All you need to know is:

Your computer name: ( They assign that)
Workgroup: @home

News server name

I am at work right now so I can't rember the email ...

Mr. Dave.... Huh?

That is another thing I forgot to mention. The mail server AND the news server in the information packet were wrong for my area. I had to call tech support for those too.

The guy says "@home is your mail server"
I told him I entered that but it would not work. He leaves the phone ...

@home diagnosis?

Trust these guys. I don't think you want the @home diagnosis.
Thanks to this forum I was able to avoid loading the @home software that I did not want.
I had noted various post here at SpeedGuide about it not being necessary to use the @home software to use the service.
I was with ISP Channel and ...

Update:
I got the router,Linksys 10/100 nic card and Belkin cables. Buy.com honored the $104.95 price. I installed it and it worked right out of the box. Napster did not work but I finally got it working by reinstalling Napster and telling it that I was behind a firewall. I ended up going to Office ...

The computer that is hooked to the 100ft cable (Windows ME) is the one Napster will run on. I read up on this before I bought the 100 ft cable and what twwabw is saying is exactly what I read on a networking site. There is not suppose to be a problem as long as the run is not over 300 and whatever ...

I thought the router takes your IP Address from your ISP and assigns two other IP Addresses for your other computers behind the router. I have two computers and the same router you do and I can access the net with both at the same time. I think you have missed something in the set up. Go back over ...

I have used the Linksys with the original firmware Ver. 1.36 and the new Ver. 1.37. It still will not work with Napster.
I do not have Zone Alarm installed anymore.
I thought you did not need that with a "hardware" firewall and it was acceptable to do away with the software firewall?
I can download ...

Linksys 4 port router

Has anyone noticed that the Linksys four port router prices are falling like the stock market?
I went to Buy.com Monday and the price was $104.95 and I noticed that BestBuy is now carrying a 8 port ($179.95) and they have dropped the 4 port.
Is the 8 port just a replacement of the four port ...
