Ok im Using a friends router right now and its a linksys befsr41 model router. I have my pc and my xbox hooked up to it and im gonna probley hook my laptop up to it i need a suggestion of a good router im gonna get one for x-mas not sure which one to get. I want a good quality one.

have any issues with your linksys? If not, why not get the same one! I have the linksys aswell and it has been giong strong for close to a year now!

I also have the same router and I have been more then pleased with it. Best money I have spent in a long time for a good piece of hardware.

The Linksys routers have matured into quite the potent little router, probably my pick for the best entry level router.

Nexland ISB SOHO routers are a little more pricey, but are faster for gaming. Just as easy to use as the Linksys.

Linksys also just came out with a router with a stronger firewall, the BEFSX41..only about 5 bucks more than the standard BEFSR41.

You said the nexland would be faster with gaming how does it make a difference will its x-mas and im getting the fastest **** out there. So im gonna get a nexland which model? I want the fastest ****.Im a picky somebody when it comes to my internet i dont wont it probleys in it i like it fast smooth and lag free.

i like the belkin 4 port router its nice make shure that you have the lynksys on a surge protector cuz mine blew out on me a couple of months ago.

Yes, I've setup a few....it works quite well, and easy to setup.

I like Microsofts MN500 wireless broadband router the best....outperforms the Linksys and Netgears from my impromptu tests at the office. I walked all the way to the edge of our parking lot and was still surfing. On bandwidth measuring sites, it outperformed them also.

No, but in the hundred dollar category it is. If you want the fastest, you'll have to spend quite a bit more money, like a Sonicwall SOHO3, or a Netopia, or a Cisco.

The ISB SOHO has quite a bit of nut, faster than Linksys or Netgear. Check out Nexland.com They're a bit over a hundred bucks. The Pro models are also great...but more $$$. I run the Symantec 200r at the office, which is a special version of the Nexland Pro 800 Turbo. Friggin FAAAAAST on a 6 meg DSL pipe!

The fastest router I've had at the house was a Netopia R910. I'm currently using a Nexland ISB SOHO, have been for the past, almost 2 years. Just a note though...I've read some peeps having problems on certain cable setups with the Nexland routers.

For the entry level routers, under a hundred bucks, I like Linksys, and used to like Netgear. Netgears are a bit faster, and more stable, but they're support was brutal, and as a reseller, I expect a much higher level of support, like Linksys and 3COM give me. Although yesterday I had a voicemail from the regional sales rep from Netgear saying he wanted to give us a special reseller package...so guess they miss our business. I may go back to them.

I don't like any other brands in the entry level home market.

Ok i Really appreciate all of your time and I dont have a t3 line or anything like that in my house so i dont think i need a pro version so im probley gonna go with the Nexland isb soho. Whats the differences between that and the linksys? and is there any difference in bandwitch tests?

Yeah the Nexland is a bit faster, has 8 megs bi-directional throughput, whereas the Linksys has around 4. Doesn't matter much when your broadband is 1.5 at best, but I've had a Linksys and Netgear also, and the Nexland does ping lower in online games.

Nexland is slow to adopt firmware that support UPnP, which will be important soon, such as using XP Windows Messenger right now, I'm not sure if Nexland will come out with it.

If I moved more then 5 feet, I went from 6-7 mbps, to about 1-2 mbps, horrible perfomance.

I have been getting top perfroamnce from my Netgear WAP

Have not tried Microsoft, so cant compare, just dont want Microsoft to have anymore of my money, they have enough..lol

That I cannot answer for you...as I do not know the construction of your house. That greatly impacts the performance of wireless. One person in a house could have it work fine, yet another person in a similar house, it may not work. Lots and lots of different things that are unique to each home that change the wireless experience from one person to another.

Its not listed on the xbox website if the nexland router will work with xbox live. Theres 3 firewalls on the router that have to be open for the router to work is what tech support said. But if i did get that router it would probley work it would jsut be harder to get working i would have to configure some stuff is what im guessing.They have pretty much all brand routers up on the website except nexland. But not all models work with the brands up there they ahve the models that work listed.

You had either a configuration or hardware issue. I have set up lots... read that LOTS of Linksys WAPs, routers, and combo router/access points. What model were you using? What PC card? Their performance is actually quite stable, and with the ver2 appliances and ver3 pc cards, performance and range have both increased.

I always configure my Client's WAP, etc. here in the office first, and always run throughput and range checks after configuring them. I have an old ver1 WAP11, and an original WPC11 v1 card, and I always compare performance on the new ones. Right now, I'm configuring a pair of BEFVP41 VPN endpoint routers, with a new WPC v3 and WAP11 ver 2 connected to one. Performance and range are excellent. I went in my basement, out in the yard, and even into my detached garage before performance fell off. A steady, consistent 52-5500kbps, with 128 bit encryption and WEP enabled.

This is where there is a dramatic change from the originals- encryption killed performance. Now, the difference is almost nothing.

All in all, for the $$$, they are hard to beat.

Kind of hard to answer. If you asked me that a year ago, I'd say yes you have it listed correct.

Nexland has gone for performance, it's very fast, but it's a small company, and firmware updates are far and few. Admin features are rich and easy through web admin. I've seen some people have a lot of trouble using them on some certain cable setups, yet most DSL peeps have no issues at all.

Netgear makes a solid quality router, it's a little faster than the Linksys, but it's firmware features are rather dry, and advanced admin features are left to the old clunky telnet, as the web admin only does some basic functions.

Linksys has tremendous development behind it as far as firmware goes....it's a product that keeps maturing and maturing, with frequent firmware updates that bring along many features. Quality wise the box itself is modest, performance wise it's also average, but you have to look at the features and compatibility the firmware brings with it. Linksys routers now support a lot of features that other routers will never support. UPnP is turning out to be a great feature for a router to support. Admin of the box is very easy through web admin, and it's full featured. And because of it's domination of the market share....you know it's the most compatible router out there. They tend to blow out faster than other routers, again back to the quality. But hey, they're only about 70 bucks now......so what if it dies at the rate of 1 a year.....at that price, no sweat to replace it.

You're looking for compatibility with the XBox.....seeing as to that's your goal, and they have a few listed compatible routers listed on their website, I'd make sure to follow that list. I'd love to say get the Nexland, but if it's not on the site as compatible, I don't know how the XBox works, or what it needs (although I will after X-Mas, the old lady got her kid one), so come January I'll know what it needs, and I'll know if it works through my Nexland ISB SOHO.

If anything it had to be hardware and it was defective, because software wise, there is not much to configure. I had both the Netgear and linksys without encyrption enabled

I used a Cicso Aironet Wireless card(which is one of the best for performance), on a Dell Laptop. Cisco has these nice tools, that actually show you the signal strength as you move around your house/apartment.

When I took my laptop with the linksys, I literally could not move more then 5 feet, before the signal went from excellent to good, and then 10 feet it went to average, then in my basement it went to poor, and was getting horrible speeds.

With the netgear i was excellent trhough my entire house first floor, and basement, and outside I had signal rating of good, and even got to the street and 3-4 houses down before the siganl rating went to fair, poor then and lost it.

I have been using the Netgear ever since, I will swear by it for the price, it gives consistent throughput no matter where I am in my house.

Well I dont have a netger wireless router, I have the Netgear wirless Acces Point, attached to a Nexland ISB Soho

I dont know if there is a major difference between the access point and just their cable wireless router in terms of performance.

My recommendation is buy it at staples, or best buy, where they have an easy return/exchange policy in case you run into any issues.

haw man i remember back in 01 when i was in search for a router everyone(and i mean EVERYONE) here seemed to highly recommend the Netgear RT314.

Yeah that's probably their biggest selling router. Still have mine kicking around in a drawer around here somewhere.

Yes all routers work with the the xbox its just some maybe hard to get configured with it cause i called support and they said that 3 firewalls had to be open for it to work so you could get pretty much any router working just it would be harder for some but on x-mas i go all out and get the nicest so i want performance and ive bored this linksys and its ok i upgraded the firmware and I could live with one but i dont love the thing. I shore wish i could go with the Nexland thats why im searching forums looking for someone that may have xbox live with a nexland router so if i dont find out my x-mas what router would you recomeend between netgear and linksys?

I've been using a Netgear RT314 for 2 years and its been rock solid. I setup a Netgear MR314 wirless for my parents and it works good as well.

My friend just bought the VPN 614 netgear router and I must say that I was quite impressed by the new web based configuration. No more telnetting into it.

Im gonna go with the Netgear RP614 that thing is stylish but i dont need the top of the line because im not running a buisness here this is for home use but i want a nice good quality home use router which the netgear should handle fine.
