2x static IP DSL accounts in each office, trying to do some voice over IP through say MSN instant messanger. I'd like to VPN the network also, so they can gain access to the NT server at the "mothership" location. If we could PM back 'n forth a few...would appreciate it.

do you mean VOIP thru telephone or via speaker and mic in a computer?? The two are quite different?
To connect the two via a VPN you will need to specify which routers you use.

Via speakers and mike on the 'puters....currently they have a Linky router at one site, and a combo router/DSL modem at the other site that the ISP installed (think it's a Siemens or Efficient)....so I'm quite sure I'll have to get a pair of routers which support VPN between, and also are h.823 compliant (think that's the protocol for voice/video comm programs)

As it is now, they're were trying to do voice through MSN (guess the later versions of instant messanger allow voice, dunno, never played with it)...but it apparantly hates NAT.

Open to suggestions for software to work between the two sites allowing "speakerphone" like communication....since they need to talk back and forth all the time, and the phone bills are killing them since it's long distance.

but I have fooled with ALOT of those programs....mostly for gaming but some others also.


If you want to keep life simple, use Roger Wilco and use a desktop mic on either end. ( the flat style mic that sits on a conference room table, damn...name of that type of mic escapes me)


anyway....not exactly speakerphone like but most voice com apps allow full duplex communication but reality is that you have to talk back and forth in walkie talkie fashion.

We ran that on our UT server for a while....yeah I remember it.

Thought that MSN instant messenger didn't play nice with NAT and voice( as in doesn't support voice via NAT). Could be old problem, I haven't looked into it lately

Netmeeting would also be an option for the speaking and should work well.

I work from home and use netmeeting often across vpn to the mothership for video conf. I am behind NAT and so is my HQ - tho they do have a conferencing server on their end.
