How is upgrading a system with a Flash ROM BIOS different than upgrading a system with a standard ROM BIOS?

for the bios i think with the standard kind you have to tell it about every new device or tell it to lookfor it. Flash is like plug and play auto matic.

power supply pin array/connector, mouse port (large round one. can;'t remember the name), on-off power switch instead of a momentary, power supply and mainboard retention screw hole placement/spacing.
at 5pin keyboard plug, most mice on at comps were serial based (db9 serial that is)
