I searched a little further since that site listed above is not a valid news source. Here's the official story from MSNBC, which follows the above link to the 't':

Wow, is all I gotta say...This is amazing.

Amazing...Looks like as time goes along, my tag line from the movie S1im0ne, is really coming to pass: "Our ability to manufacture fraud has now exceeded our ability to detect it." I guess if the authorities can't distiguish who is really comitting the crime, then you just make everyone a criminal and you can arrest anyone at any time.

How are they going to catch people playing games in their homes? Send in a spy? Give me a freaking break. This is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard.

I wonder what would happen to Americans that were caught playing on a server that was hosted in Greece? You know that people will still do it there and that online gaming is global....what happens then?
This is insanity at it's finest.

If they have problems with their computers and take them somewhere to be fixed, and they forget to remove ALL traces of games on the PC, they probably could be screwed. After banning gaming entirely, spys wouldn't surprise me.
It really is just mind boggling. And the reasoning behind the law is a farce. They think someone playing Quake is actually gambling? They say they can't tell the difference. Unbelievable.

Of course this is no different from the bans on porn you see in some places. Just another sick example of people trying to control what other people do. We know what's best, we know what's right. Obey.
And Athens is the site of the 2004 Olympics. What's gonna happen when they figure out people may bet on the events?

It's not a different TOPIC, it's the same principle.
I notice you didn't object to the comment about China blocking Google.....
hmmmmmm.

NEANDERTHAL!
no, I didn't object to the comment about China. I see THAT as being similar to the gaming one. But it makes more sense. You could search for porn with google
In all seriousnes, I do see a big difference (IMHO of course) between banning porn and banning games/google. Maybe someday porn will be accepted by the majority like games are, but it will always be considered moraly wrong by a lot of groups, some of them even sane. Porn, currently, is just much more of a gray area than a lot of other things. HOWEVER, I don't agree with it being banned either from being looked at on your home PC. I just see the reasoning there better than I do with games. exploitation of woman et all.
PS- I add the "lol" to my first post because I was laughing when I read it, and didn't mean for it to sound like a challenge.

It's hard for me to see a difference in principle other than, as you say, majority acceptance. Hey, can I change the unfortunate fact that a majority of people can't think logically?

(I'm just saying Greece ain't unique in having that problem)
Exploitation of women? ----- guys do porn too.
With that said, I think I'm gonna make an exit before the thread jacking cops arrive.

I've been thinking about this for a bit. This is a law of such sheer stupidity that it can't take very long until it is either revised or challenged by a court, a European Court if necessary.
I mean, a fine or even prison for owning a friggin' chess computer?!? COME ON!
WTH were they thinking?!?
