Network Problems

System Setup

I have a Dell XPS T500 (Server) with Win 98Se installed onto a cable modem. I have a network configured using a dual NIC (one for cable ISP, other for home network) The second system (client) is a Dell 4300 with Win XP. I have installed Sygate Home Network between the two systems and it has worked great for about 6 months.

Problem

Last night my kids complained that they were not able to access the internet on the client unit. Specially, was not able to download email- system timed out although it was trying to access pop3 and download 4 messages, start up AOL IM or it took for ever to download a web page.

I have spent the day searching for tweaks, patches, fixes etc. Have tried a couple of the Sygate suggestions to troubleshoot client speed problems, nothing worked.

I thought maybe the kids had downloaded program or virus which caused it. Ran Norton and restored system configuration from over a month ago. Nothing.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Sysgate software, modified registry via your cable tweak directions for the server. (BTW it works great)

Has anyone had this sudden problem and found a good fix.

Any help/direction would be appreciated

Thanks

More often than not it is the simplest of things that cause us problems (log-ons, reboots, router/modem resets)
Have you checked the event viewer logs for clues?

I'm not sure how to view the event logs. Can you help me there? XP is a new world for me.

Thanks
