Recently I've tried to setup a small network (3 machines) using WinXP Home edition. I went to the network properties and setup TCP/IP as usual.
The troubles started right from the beginning. Sometimes windows report the network cable as not connected (never mind if you can see the others two machines), sometimes the network doe not work at all, and when it does it goes sloooow.... I've checked werther the built in firewall is disabled (yes it is).
Any idea to speed things on?
Using the same computers (nics, cables, HUB) with Win98 the lan goes smooth as hot butter.

Something to think about.With win xp I had to set the network up for every user I had . I have 4 user names so I had to add a network printer for each name . Befor I did that If I was on a user name that the network was not set up on the same thing happen that you are talking about would happen.
what I did was get on using each user name and and ran ,add a network place. that fix it

What kind of NICs are in your machines? I have seen some lower end cards do some crazy stuff with autonegotiating the ethernet speed and duplex level (duplexity?? doesnt sound right ). Try setting the speed to all the same values starting with 10Mbit and moving up as far as it will let you. I saw this on Win2K, ME and XP. (mysteriously after I upgraded them to the latest, newest, greatest driver set off of windowsupdate.microsoft.com i might add. rolling them back to the original drivers solved the problem as well)

My NICs are common Realtek8139, with the latest drivers from Realtek site, they plug into an Ovislink HUB. As I've said before they worked fine with Win98. I'll try and set the speed manually to 10MBs (there is an ADSL router hooked in the LAN), and pray.
As for setting up the network for each and every user... Is it not suppossed that with every new S.O. things should go smoother and easier?

Just so you know thats the same card I had the problems with.

Are the comps under the same workgroup?
Try all comps under one workgroup name.
It helped me out.

Yes, the computers share the same workgroup. It is not an issue of wrong setup. As I said before using the same parameters with Win98 or WinME the network works fine. The trouble lies with WinXP, the must be something that screws thing up.

Sorry for my failure to read your post properly the first time.

How about just mapping hard drives instead of all that shared folder stuff. xp shared folder crap(crap to me) was slow for me
so I just mapped hard drives instead. I hope you find your solution.

So far I can say that I am NOT happy at all with WinXP networking capabilities. At least in the small network neighbourhood. I'll try and map drives, as suggested by SoWhat, but the fact still remains that it is not as easy to set up a LAN as was with Win98.
