Just a thought: same with local network sharing and mapping. My friend share his drive and i just map it using his IP and username/password? exp: \\xxx.xx.xx.xx\c$

i'm not trying to hack or anything. thought if this work, i wouldn't have go through the hastle setting up ftp server for file sharing. or is there any other way?

Well, you'd have to go through the trouble of setting up a VPN, which may or may not work depending on which ISP's you both use, and which routers you guys have. Symantec makes a nice Gateway/VPN router device, which Nexland actually makes. Supports gateway to gateway VPN.

You could set up SSH server on the computer and use SFTP for remote file Xfer; with Linux, it's built in. For Windows, try these sites:

http://www.ssh.com/products/ssh/for_windows/ (for server)

http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/ (great client)

SSH is much safer than reg. ftp or telnet; just create nice LONG scrambled passwords for all your user accts and don't leave a lot of extra user accts. on your machine.

Have Fun!
