Lobo,

Question for ya,

I'm on cable internet right now and I was offered 2 free months of DSL with a free D-Link external modem (300.00CDN) everything free with no obligation to stay. $5.00/month cheaper than the cable I'm paying for now. So, I'm giving them a try and was wondering a few things. Here it goes:

1. Can I just plug in their new NIC card along side my cable NIC card? I don't want to give up my cable connection until I give DSL a good test drive. The sales person on the phone says that it will be up to 5X faster and more consistant than cabe. I'll judge that lol.

2. What Rwin values would be good to try with DSL running NORMAL connection. Don't think it is PPPOAE.

3. Should MTU be set to 1500?

Win ME
SG TCP Opti progy installed

I'm getting this DSL connection next week so I'll let you know how I like it.

Thanks

I don't believe it will be faster, does it use your phone line, no calls, is it a slow USB Modem, RWIN 51100 or 64240 if not PPPoE :)

Yes MTU would still be 1500, PPPoE is different for different OS's :)

Your line speed:

40800 Kbps

5000 K bytes/sec

Almost as fast as #8.

Thanks for the reply(s)

The DSL modem will be connected to NIC card (they said) external D-link make and I do know they also provide an internal modem but didn't find out until after the sales pitch. Which would be better do ya think? And can I run both NIC cards at the same time (cable and DSL)? I don't mean running the internet on both cable and DSL at the same time as I don't think that would work. Just unplug my cable from the NIC card and plug the new cable into the new DSL NIC. Will that work?

Thanks for the new RWIN values I'll give them a try next week.

Oh, the DSL service is 1.5MB down and 512 up from Telus Velocity ADSL through phone line.

Cheers

Ya, I hear you Lobo, but I have to hook that mess up myself as there will be no tech coming out to the house. They like to call it "self installation." I call it uh-oh!

Anyway thanks for the info and I'll let you know how the self install goes :( :) :D

Cheers!

Yes you can run 2 NIC cards, download Optimizer for DSL so you won't have to keep changing Cable one, when it asks overwrite, select no :) , just make sure you select NIC (DSL) adapter for this :)
