I used the analyser provided by the web page, and I got those results

Now im wondering...since it says that my RcvWindow limits me to: 10278.4 kbps , my maximum speed should be able to reach around 1 meg/s right? Or I am misreading something?

Also, when I got this cable modem, my maximum speed was around 290k/s. I used the patch found in this website to edit my registery, and I still got the same speed. Then, I decided to use the TCPOptimizier , and unfortunatly my speed was still the same.. Any idea on how to get the best performance out of my cable modem?

Welcome to Speed Guide. What is your service cap or if you don't know who is your service provider.

That number is the speed value the RWIN was calculated with and is there for reference only. Your actual speed will depend on what your service is capped at.

Your speed of 290 k/s is that Kilobits or Kilobytes?

I think its 290 kilobytes. That's the fastest I get with download accelerator ( after the starting burst, which goest around 600 k ). My internet provider is Videotron, from montreal, Canada. I dont know my service cap , sorry.

I've run another speed test, and I was able to see that my cable modem was able to go at an average of 430 KILOBITS/s this time. I hope it can help you in any way..

Even though it is not the nearest the Dallas test is pretty quick


BEFORE SPEEDTEST
1.) Make sure defrag has been run, fragmented files slow you down.
2. At top of IE, click on Tools, internet options, click on delete files and click on offline files (It's safe), click on clear history, yes
3.) Go to Start button, programs, accessories, system tools, disk cleanup, Click OK (Safe)
4.) Run scandisk (Short version)
5.) Scandisk on XP?
Click on My Computer, select Drive that XP is on, RIGHT click on BLANK place, select properties, then tools at top tab, click check now, check box automattically fix system errors, click start,
then test. Turn all running programs off. Reboot computer so you have all your RAM

My ISP is Videotron. Also, I cleared my cache/ history , etc , and i've run the tests that you mentioned. The results are in my previous post ( the one before yours )

That is not same test, plus you divide by 8 kbs to get KBs, Kilobytes (CAPs)
so 430 Kilobits, and you will have to call ISP for CAPS as I don't know yours

Dont mean to sound rude, but its REALLLLLY extreme to defrag your drive, thru all your programs off and reboot your comp just to run a speedtest Lobo. They honestly wont affect your throughput.

Just show me in White papers where RAM does not matter, and my system is faster after I run defrag, Also I spent all night trying to find out how to repair IE6 without sucess, so if you know please pass it along If Mods want me to take defrag out I will

I tried to call them, but they woudn't tell me the Cap. But my guess is that my modem can go up to 300-350 kilobytes/sec . Unfortunatly, when I run the test, I only get about 270 kilobytes ( with TCPOptimizer ).

Go to their web site, what are their advertised speeds, 50 times faster than 56K, or 50 times faster than dialup, which usally means a 28.8 modem

I just came back from college, and ill try what you mentioned above in a few mins, thanks lobo!!

Also, I visited their webpage, and they only show a graphic which compares the cable speed with dial-up and adsl. They say their service is about 2.5 fast then a 1mbit/s ADSL modem

Sure your system may be faster, but your ethernet speed isnt affected by it. Your system doesnt affect it either. Your network card, sure. But mostly when you do LAN transfers. Otherwise, no.

I tried what you mentionned Lobo, but it seems it only slowed down my connection

System specs matter in setting RWIN, I would call ISP or it could be NIC card and mIt has been verified by experiment that certain auto-negotiating ethernet cards (both in PCs and in Macs), when connected to certain models of cable modem, sense the ethernet duplex setting incorrectly. Such a cable modem has ethernet hardware which is capable of operating only in half-duplex mode, at 10 Mbps, yet some auto-negotiating ethernet cards sense it as full-duplex. If an auto-negotiation card incorrectly starts operating in full-duplex mode, there can be collisions between ethernet packets being transmitted in both directions at the same time, leading to packet loss, and repeated re-transmissions. There is no visible evidence of this apart from poor performance. This problem can be avoided by manually configuring your ethernet card to be 10 Mbps half-duplex. No ill-effects will transpire from doing this, even when it is not necessary. The exact wording of the setting changes required varies from one manufacturer to another, so the instructions below are necessarily rather broadly defined.

To make this change under Win98/ME, follow these steps:

Open Control Panel.
Double-click Network.
From the scrollable list, select your Ethernet adapter (rather than any dial-up) with a green icon.
Click the button Properties.
Click the tab Advanced to bring it to the front:
In the Property box, the property name to be selected varies according to model of ethernet card. Examples are: Network Link Selection, Media Type, Connection Type, Duplex Mode, or any similarly-named property which can have Values looking like Auto-Negotiation, or 10BT, or 10BaseT.
In the Value box, select a value which either (a) explicitly says half-duplex or semi-duplex, or (b) at least does not say full-duplex [e.g. 10BaseT on its own is OK]. If there is a choice between 10 and 100 with half-duplex, choose the 10. Do not choose 10Base5, 10Base2, or AUI.

Click OK all the way out - you might need to restart.

They will tell you everythings fine, to get them to your house tell them you are going to take screwdriver to modem to see if you can fix it, tell them you think your splitter is bad, thats the thing that splits the signal from TV & Modem, good luck

Well the problem is, my modem is capped at around 350k. I can get another one that goes up to 850KBs, BUT, I can download monthly only around 6 Gig. With this current modem, I can download an upload as much as I want.

Should I change it or not, hmmm...

Guys, tell me, do you download up to 6 gig a month?

Someone came last week lobo, he changed something outside and now I can go up to 250KBs. Before my max was around 150KBs. Im not gonna ask them to come again

How do do speed test
1. The best time is early in the morning (3 AM - 6 AM)
2. Make sure defrag has been run so no files are fragmented
3. Delete Temp internet files, not while testing, but after each test. IE browser, click tools, internet options, click on delete files and no this will not harm system, just get rid of temp files
4. Go to a fast server such as http://www.happypuppy.com and click on 10 demos, select a LARGE file to download (not all of it , just most of it, before you click cancel) this will show you how fast you are downloading, it's not going to be quick except except early in morning when not many people on net. I recommend you go to http://www.analogX.com and download Net State live, run this while downloading as it will give you avg of your download speed, really all you need on Net Stat is incoming data, incoming totals and Local machine, right click on Net Stat anywhere, stactics and check these 3 items, the rest need not be checked unless you want them, all you care about is average. Another fast download site is ftp.lucasarts.com
Put system defrag in scheduled tasks to run everyday.
5. Probably the most important, nothing can be running during test, no firewalls, no virus stuff, no ICQ, no AIM (some of you may have to go into BIOS to disable virus scanner, nothing running except Net Stat live
Scheduled tasks will run disk defrag, 98 & SE in Taskbar, WIN ME in control panel
The people who want speed surfing or doing whatever must close all other programs.

Or if you wish you may go to http://www.testmyspeed.com and do one of the online tests, these vary to much for me but you may like them.

Thats not bad speed, it's not the modem, it's the bandwidth your ISP gives you, some people on here are faster or maybe they are fudging alittle, who cares
