I have an 8-port Asound switch can I network several PCs with that switch to share a cable modem or do I need to use a hub with it?

it should work with ICS
2 NICS in 1 comp
Cable Modem to one NIC
Connect to switch with other NIC
then connect all the other comps; obviously...
and you'll need to use ICS

-a switch is just a smart hub
-it will work with your cable modem, but you will need an IP for each PC
-OR: you could get a router with a built in 4 port switch

you can network with a switch and only a switch. and yes you can share the cable modem connection with the other PCs. Download a NAT (sygate has a pretty good one) and use it. Your network will work fine on a switch but ur net connection might mess up every now and then as the other PC's on the network tries to obtain the original IP automatically. If you go with a router like bug suggested, you'll be fine. I bought myself a router :-) my worries are gone :-)

Actually, the switch is my friend's. He wants me to help setup his network, I myself use a router, it's much easier to configure. I just haven't had the experience networking PCs to a cable modem using a Switch.

i must tell you, that you really need a router or
1 pc with 2 nics installed and NAT or ICS or a good PROXY.

direct connection sharing with a switch or a hub connected to a cable modem or adsl is not possible and not recommended.

when you do this only 1 computer at a time gets connection to the net.

and you DESTROY YOUR SECURITY because the switch or hub has no integrated Firewall and the connected computers work on the same subnet as the one with the internet access.

I have been doing it with ADSL for 3 years with 2 PC's

Disk hea backing up bug once again. It's true, it can be done and i have been doing it also! Like I said, you MIGHT and most likely will experience a lil problem here and there with the net connection but other than that it should be okay. Well i got me a router so i no longer have to worry about that

i know that it is theoretically possible, but because i not know any
ISP here in germany that is willing to give more than 1 IP to the customer without getting much more money and the few ISP´s that did it mostly considered not to allow it in further cases its better to
tell its not possible.

and its not RECOMMENDED at all why not use a PC with 2 NICS and then a HUB ?? its better security and the ISP not knows what you are doing! the most isps only want much more money from you when they know that you share your connection and some isps slightly will cancel your contract if they know what you are doing.

networkcards are cheap nowadays, so please not spare at the wrong end

Correct, many users get multiple IP accounts from their ISP, and connect several home PC's to their broadband using just a switch.

Myself? I prefer a router to share one IP and protect the LAN with it's NAT firewall, instead of plopping troublesome software firewalls on each PC which you would be smart to do if you did the "multiple IP on a switch" method, but to say it's "not possible" is simply not true.

My provider (Time Warner/Road Runner out of Cincinnati Ohio) gives two IP addresses with a standard account.

I am using a switch to give my PC one of the IPs and the other IP to my router for the rest of the LAN.

If you have multiple IPs, you can use a switch to connect the computers to the modem. In this case, you need an IP for each computer (or at least another IP for a router for the rest of the LAN).

i believe the switch thingy will work if you find out if you get 2 ip's. just connect the 2 computers to the switch thingy in the normal ports and depending on your switch(which are all foreign to me) you need to either connect the cable modem to the uplink of the switch or like my old linksys hub, to any port opening. it depends on the switch. then fire up both of those bad boys and let her rip. ipconfig both from the command prompt and find out what each ip is,(that is if it works). works for me.
