I've got two computers here, one with a Kingston ethernet card, the other with a new Linksys one.

I have the Kingston one connected to my cable modem at most times, but once or twice I've switched it over to the computer with the Linksys. The thing is, it didn't work "today" on that computer. I mean that as in, no settings or anything were changed, and it just didn't work.

I figured the service might be down for repairs and tried it on this comp. Worked here. Tried it on the other one, and nothing again. The funny thing is I double checked, and all of the settings remained the same. And there are no hardware conflicts or anything that I can think of that would cause this. Any clue what's up with it?

Ping 127.0.0.1, that's the card. Then ping the modem IP, get the address from your work order. You may have a connectivity issue. If you are using 2 different CAT 5 cables try using one that is known to work. Maybe the NIC got fried from ESD by walking across your carpet and plugging in while you're charged.

what is the OS on the pc with the Link Sys nic card

I pinged that address, and got either 1ms, or <10ms for all 4 (?) tries. And no, its the exact same cable, just switched from one NIC to another. Working fine here, but not so fine on the other one.

The card still works fine with transferring files between these two computers, but can't seem to do anything with my modem anymore (like I said, it worked before). I'll fiddle around a bit later and see if I find anything.

I tried reinstalling the drivers, but that did nothing, so I might try uninstalling the card and starting over, or even sticking it in another PCI slot (although there are no hardware conflicts).

And sorry if I forgot to mention, its 98SE.

What king of linksys nic card is it?

Their EtherFast 10/100 LAN card, a LNE100TX (v. 4).

But like I said, it WORKED, and then it didn't.

As far as I know, the settings are all identical to the ones on this computer, which has no problem using the same RCA modem. When I go to IE, it gives me something like "Looking for Proxy server" and then just gives me a DNS error. I'm going to fiddle around with it, but I honestly have no clue why it would work one day, and not another.

Heh! Sometimes, depending on the OS, it takes a bit for the LAN to fully recognize everything is there. I noticed that the first time I set one up on a hub. Did everything right and nothing worked. Then, after awhile, they talked and everythign was there.

There's little freaking gremlins in these boxes, man!
