Quitting Smoking

Post by FunK »

Hey all, I'm getting on the non smoking bandwagon. :)

What I wanna know is, what did you guys that used to smoke do to change your habits to not want a cigarette?

I went to the doc and he gave me welbutrin (like Zyban).
It's supposed to fool your body into thinking it has the nicotine but it is not addictive like nicotine.

I started taking it yesterday and I already feel my cravings starting to dwindle. My friend used it and after about 3 or 4 days he had no cravings.

Anyone else have similar results?
I know quitting cold turkey is best, but damn the cravings are a killer.
Simply run adaware, spybot, ZoneAlarm, HijackThis, AVG, update windows daily, have a router, don't open e-mail, turn off action scripting, don't use P2P networks, don't violate EULAs, and wear a condom to get Windows secured.

People say Linux is alot of work!

I quit on Easter Sunday, cold turkey, and have not smoked since. I really have not changed my habits, but when you first quit you kinda have to keep a little distance between you and other smokers until you feel confident enough to go around them without wanting a cig.
Everybody is taking the Afghan war lightly, but in the meantime the realisation that a full-blown war is in progress creates all the uncertainties (and inevitable surprises) that wars always produce.

I didn't use anything. I didn't 'replace' my habit with anything equally annoying such as chewing gum, eating sunflower seeds, chewing on a toothpick, etc.

I just quit. of course, I used hypnosis so that's a little different than your method. When I quit before, using the patch, I did find that I needed something else, though I don't remember if I replaced my habit then either.

If you can avoid the replacement syndrome, do so at all costs, otherwise you're partially defeating the purpose. Though eating sunflower seeds is worlds better than smoking, your friends and family won't especially enjoy your replacement habit either.

I wish you the best of luck Funk. It's not an easy thing to do by any means.

<hypnosis music> But, you have the power over this thing and you are in total control. You will be successful. The power over the evil tobacco is within you. Tobacco now has absolutely no control and your desire to stop smoking is now taking over and smothering the need for any more cigarettes. </hypnosis music>

Best of luck to ya! :)

I tried hypnosis, but it did not work for me.

Hi FunK

" Congradulations & Good Luck "

Just try to break your every day cycle a bit. For ie if you have a morning coffee and smoke, have a milk instead, or a juice.

If you drove to work and smoked on the way, try taking a different route if possible, to distract you a bit.

I know this sounds stupid, but it worked for me.

Whenever the urge would strike me to have a smoke, i would say out loud, No Thanks i Don't Smoke Anymore, even when alone.

It seemed to validate the fact i'd quit or something ? I don't know, but it did seem to help.

Anyway Good Luck, it's worth doing.

regards

Yeah Crump, but you didn't read this!

Powerful stuff there man! ;)

But, seriously: Yeah, not every method works for everyone, that's for sure. I say use whatever method it takes to get you to quit. It's worth it! Anything to break that circle! (Good advice Minir!!)

Funk, congrats man. Once you kick it, you'll never look back.

I used the patch.....terrible dreams and another story.

I tired to think of it this way, that when I smoked was during a "rest phase" so to speak.

Like when I just finished a job or after eating. So basicly I just tried to keep busy. Stay away from convience stores for a couple of months. Avoid smokers if you can for a while.

I've heard of people have good results with Zyban.

Good Luck!!

oh yeah, think of all that money your going to save
The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, and prejudices to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill and suspicion can destroy and a thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all of its own for the children and the children yet unborn and the pity of it is that these things cannot be confined to the Twilight Zone.

Just do it. Nothing anyone else says will change anything for you. It has to be your decision to quit. Once your mind knows what to think, cigarettes become really f*cking nasty.
