Thanks just curious why do you recommed this one over any other?

btw I found it cheaper for $117 at CDW, which is a pretty good deal.

I've played around with the NetGear router for a while, and it's right on the money with respect to NAT, and WAN DHCP and/or PPPoE functions. I've read many complaints about Linksys routers with respect to NAT'ing, none that I could talk about with the NetGear router. The only drawback by comparison to a Linksys BEFSR411 is the management interface. The NetGear router makes use of a text-based terminal emulator that you could access using HyperTerminal, whereas the Linksys makes use of a web interface. Other than that, I'd say you will be happier with the RT314.

I dont mind the text based interface at all....I forgot to ask how is it with in mind to playing games? I play lots of online games from hal-life, unreal tournament, asheron call, and so on? Is there anything I need to conifgure special to allow these games to play at maximum performance?

Thanks again

I don't play online games, but judging from others that have purchased the router to play online with it, it performs very well. I would think the only instance that you may need to configure anything special on that router is if you want to host game servers, and that can be easily accomplished via port forwarding.

Just to add to MosDef's post... The Netgear also has a "web page" interface for setting it up. Also, with the latest firmware, they've added more setup options to it as well, such as forwarding a whole range of ports.

But for the advanced things, like setting up port filters, etc... you would use a Telnet session.
The latest firmware is 3.25 (i think), and easily upgraded with FTP session.

I'm quite satisfied with my netgear.

Really? Weird.. I guess I must have been using the wrong IP address when I was trying to access the router via a browser.

The Sohoware Broadguard NBG800. It' s 4-port Cable/DSL router with a lot of features built-in and has web page setup. I got mine for $49.50 at Best Buy (clearance). There is a review posted on SpeedGuide (http://www.speedguide.net/reviews/broad ... ndex.shtml).

The only weird thing I've encountered about this device is that, sometimes my cable modem reboots on it's own and assigns a new IP. Then this happens, I have to re-boot the router and all is well.

MosDef,
I also remember someone saying that if you're having touble accessing the webpage, try using IE 5.5.
Funny, I can't get into in now, even with IE 5.5. I get the message that it is a protected item. Heh...

I tried Netscape and it works, but seems limited. I cannot access the "advanced" section, but I can access other sections.

On another occasion, ZA wouldn't let me in.
Guess I've got a little investigating to do.
Haven't had the need to get in there for some time now, but now that this is happening, I've gotta try to figure it out whats up with it. I've opened a can of worms... :rotfl:

Ok, I figured it out, using IE 5.5.
I had to go into my internet options of IE, open up security, then add the webpage address " 192.168.0.1 " as a trusted site.

All is good and peacefull again......

I originally bought a Linksys, but took it right back after reading all of the issues I've read about on this site back then.
I didn't even fire it up, went in the store and came back out with the netgear and never looked back.

Sounds like over the past few months, they've worked out some of the issues with the Linky, but I would still take the netgear hands down. Good solid construction. :)

The NetGear has a semi-full featured web admin now with the latest firmware, not as easy as the Linksys...but still quite adequate. The TelNet interface isn't that bad once you're used to it, I still use it at work, faster for me than the web admin.
