Types of DSL?

Post by CableDemon »

1. What are the speeds (down/up) of the connections below?
2. How much does each relatively cost?
3. Which am I able to get (residental/business)?

56K, Cable, ADSL, HDSL, VDSL, HDSL, ISDN, DSL, FracT1, T1, FracT3, T3, Frame Relay

Im just curious cause i want to get a connect other than a cable. Cable is giving me a hard time.

Thanks

56k - self explanatory :)
Cable - up to 42Mbps

"DSL" doesn't have a speed, but individual products in the DSL (also called xDSL) family do have specific speeds:

ADSL - up to 6Mbps
HDSL/SHDSL - 2Mbps up/down
VDSL - 13/25/52Mbps down, upstream varies
ISDN - Basic rate will give you 2 x 64k = 128k, unless your telco uses robbed bit signalling (some crappy American telco's do).
Primary rate ISDN will give you 1.536Mbps in the USA, and 2Mbps in Europe/Australia

Fractional T1 is a fraction of a T1. A T1 has a line rate of 1.544Mb, with 1.536Mb accessible.

Same deal with T3 - ~45Mbps in a T3, fractional T3 is a portion of it.

Frame Relay can run on almost anything, at a variety of speeds. Popular rates are 56k - 2Mb

E1 = 2Mb
E2 = 8Mb
E3 = 34Mb
E4 = 140Mbps
E5 = 565Mbps and so on..

Costs will vary greatly depending on location + provider.

Residential you would be looking at :

Cable, 56k, ADSL, HDSL, ISDN. the others are rarely offered as residential services.

My DSL line is 1.5-6mb down and 384k up. I wish I could increase just my up speed to 512k.
