Please explain what 'fractional T3' means?

Post by TerraFORM »

I'll be getting this in my new ethernet-ready apartment in a couple of weeks.

What kind of connection is this? Average upload/download speeds?

Essentially, it is a deal with the local University, which is less than one mile away, and will cost me about $30US per month. What can I expect with this connection?

Also, on another note, concerning WinME:

How in god's green earth do I turn off the autoupdate utility? It comes on at the most inopportune times (i.e., when gaming on my current 56k, which as you know is already really slow) and steals my already meager BW.

I cannot find anywhere on my system how to turn this bugger off. Help is appreciated.

A fractional T3 means it will be less bandwidth than a normal T3 line. You could have anything from 1.5Mbps down to just about 45Mbps down but I dont think they are going to give you anything even close to 45. They may give you like 2Mbps down. Im not sure about the upload.

I would take that to mean that the University has a fractional T3 connection to the Internet. Sounds like they put a hub or switch somewhere in your building to provide Ethernet to the individual apartments.

Do you mind telling us what University, please?

Yeah that makes more sense.

i know virginia tech has a similar deal with people living in the surrounding town, they provide dial-up for a small fee i think, not sure if they do anything more, but all their dorm's have network access thru a t-3

Heh, yes, you have it on the mark...

This is at Virginia Tech. Thanks for the responses, people.

I've just had 56k for so long now I can hardly wait for this speed. Perhaps now I can run a gaming server!

I imagine I'll need to update some reg settings once it gets in, but likely the people handling the service will tell me what to do. Otherwise, I know I can come here to find out :)

I don't think that the University have one fraction T3 connected to the net, what I could imagin is that your apartment complex have one T3 connected to the university that the people in the aparments are sharing. So at of peak hours you could get very good speeds...

But this is just a guess from my side...
