DSL Freezes

Post by Beowulf121 »

I subscribe to Bellsouth FastAccess ADSL service.

I have a *cough* Compaq *cough*. My problem is very weird, and very frequent. Basically, I can connect to my isp without any problems. Once I am connected, I do not get disconnected. But, the connection may temporarily "freeze." As an example, I may be browsing the internet and when I click on a link, it does not do anything. If I am connected to a messenger service at the same time (e.g. ICQ), it is unaffected. Outlook Express, however, will not connect during these temporary freezes.

Things I've tried:
1)Bellsouth Tech. Support = Clueless
2)Compaq Tech. Support
a. Re-installed my network card drivers
b. Got rid of "double" drivers (Device Manager)
3)A new web browser...Opera

Nothing has solved this problem
Can anyone help me?

Any time you spend here is a appreciated :)

If you use BellSouth FastAccess, you more than likely have PPPoE. The only reason that you wouldn't be is if you are one of the REALLY old (the bridged) customers.

What program do you use to logon to the internet: Enternet 300 or Dial-up Networking?

If you use Enternet 300, go here: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/faq/5.+Tr ... ooting#156

What have you done for bacis trouble shooting.....

The most comman cause for something like that is The temp intrenet files.

Go My computer> Control panal> Intrenet opions> Settings (in the middle)> View Files delete everything in there. If you have net scape my computer>C:\>pograms file>netscape>users
Del the chace folder (don't worry netscape will remake it just delete the whole folder.)

Uninstall opra, power down your computer unplug everything from your modem. Let it sit for 90 sec and rehook up medem back-up and than once that powred up turn on your computer.

If it stills gives you the same prombles try tp ping the the primary DNS and the 2nd dns. If you don't know them your porvider will.

And let us know whats going on.

:)

Have you had this promble befor?

Are you a new cust.?

Hello,
I had a similar problem the first month as a Bellsouth Fast Access customer. The Technicians had no clue, the 'real ones' told me to download some tweak from http://www.dslreports.com but it still didnt work. Then I tried these other solutions I got from surfing the net:
1. Use RASPPPoE
2. Set IP address to 10.10.10.10 and subnet mask to 255.0.0.0

If those steps fail, you should try to check the System Status webpage here
http://consumer.bellsouth.net/system/

And yes, you are using PPPoE :)

Post by Beowulf121 »

AlabamaMan,
The set up for RASPPPoE...was really confusing and ended up doing some weird things.

This leads me to believe that...i messed up the installation and somehow, i'm still using the wrong PPPoE.

I believe this because...i'm still getting the freezes. I dont understand what you mean by that ip number.

Where do I put that?

If you're using a USB ADSL modem w/ Dial-up Networking, then you are NOT using PPPoE. You are using PPPoA.

Did you go to: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/faq/5...bleshooting#156

and look at the info there? Try that and let us know what happens.

Depressing

Post by Beowulf121 »

I checked out the FAQ's. I read that, putting it bluntly, USB ADSL Modems suck!

Either way, I called Bellsouth (again) and they are finally going to send out a technician. Are Ethernet style modems (or whatever you call 'em) more expensive than USB Modems?

"Free DSL Modem..." Well, if the free one is busted, maybe they'll replace it with an Ethernet modem? (boy am i dreaming)

Thanks Everybody!

Tell the technicians you want :
1. The PPP drivers out of your comp
2. Install the PPPoE drivers to use PPPoE

Or just use an External modem connected to an Ethernet card, get the Speed Touch Home modem, its awesome.

Down with...the problem NO ONE can solve

Post by Beowulf121 »

:(

Ok...well, I had a Bellsouth Technician come by today. He told me: "Oh yea...its definitely the modem, thats our oldest model...blah blah blah...its a resource hog thats why your freezing...blah blah blah"

So...he uninstalls the old (ADSL USB Speadstream 4060 PPP) modem.

*At this point, I have to leave, I leave a technologically impaired 'rent to oversee*

It turns out, the Alcatel USB modem he tried to install didnt have the proper drivers, so he decides to install a 3Com PCI ADSL modem (? is this any good?)

Tonight I begin browsing...excited, thinking all my browser freeze troubles where over. Well, Much to my dismay...he didnt solve jack shiite.

Its PPPoA.....any suggestions?

Did you try what I posted??

What are some of the bacis trouble shooting steps that you have taken?

There are many things that can cause this buts it best to get the bascis done frist. IT could be something really smiple.

Any prombles with your email?< that is a impotan question>

What about the phone cord that you are using is a DSL phone cord that no more than 6' long?

Is it pluged in to the wall without any slpiters fliters, ect.. in the way?

Did you del the temp files??

Yep...I have problems with the e-mail. It freezes simultaneously with the browser (along with the entire connection).

Basically, lets say i'm connected the internet...I can start browsing, then the browser will stop up. If i try to establish a connection to ANYTHING (e-mail, aim, irc, multiplayer games...) it wont happen until the 30+ period is over.

About the spliters....the phone comany has splitters that are on there to allow for multiple lines in the room (i have 5 lines in the house)

About the phone cord...i believe the technician put in a new phone cord that came with the modem when he installed it (i'll doule check that)

I've deleted and continuely delete the temp internet files.

Thank you very much for the help man,

It could be a tcp/ip promble or a a wscoks issue. It sounds something like that.

Frist make sure that you have the window98se install cd.
If not, do this --- Start>find>files and folders> do a search for *.cab make sure you have "look in" on the c:\ drive or all local hard drives. Than post back here the number your win98 range from.

They will look like this WIN98_22.Cab or WIN98se_22.Cab
---------------------------------
If you have the cd don't worry about that.

Go my computer>control panel>network> in there remove tcp/ip

Reboot ingore any your network is not complete messages.

Once rebooted go back into network and do this click add> highlight protcol and click add> on the left highlight microsoft and than on the right highlight tcp/ip and click ok. You will see it in the network stack agian after that click ok out of network if it ask for the disk put it in if it don't and just starts to copy files don't worry about it just means that you have the cab files.

If it give you a pop up while copying that said version conflict click No. We want to replave the older files with new ones. After its done reboot and give it another shot.

I have Verizon DSL and Im running RASPPPoE.

I had THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM until I assigned my ethernet card IP address 192.168.0.1 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 . That fixed it.

The question is whether or not you can do the same using a USB modem.

Rip that crap out and ask your provider to send you an ethernet modem. That should solve the problem.

He can do the same it's called hardcoding tcp/ip.

with thoese cab files you will be able to un/reinstall tcp/ip just follow what I posted earlier. If you need help let us know. :) I don't get to SG as much as I like but If you need any help with it just make a thread in the softwear fourms about un/reinstalling tcp/ip.

Hardcoding tcp/ip might work. You have to call your isp for help on that one its really simple just tell you wnat to try hardcoding your tcp/ip

That can also be your promble. If you don't have enough rescourse free than the dsl can clough up your memory. All though you really should not have that promble with 384 ram.

Just go to start run and type in msconfig on the last tab there there will be a list of programs that start up when you boot your computer. Some of them you will know and some of them you might not know. If you need any help with what you should have start up when you boot your computer ask the people in the softwear fourms there a list floting around that tells you what you need one of them might have it.
