I just got a new computer for myself and we want to split the cable so my new comp can have it as well as my old comp? So that means i want to split the cable with two computers(with my new and old one). So i was just wondering what i need to do so? I've herd of Routers and Hubs. Which one do i need for this situation? And what else?

I would say get a router. I like the netgear routers because linksys routers are know to slow you down. If your new computer doesn't have a nic you will need one. Get a netgear or linksys nic if you have too. But go with a netgear router. If you wan't to find some on the web go http://pricewatch.com and look for some there. and if you wan't more detail on routers and hubs go to the networking forum.

Will the (Netgear Cable/DSL Router with NAT and 4-Port 10/100 Switch) be a good router for my situation and will i get the best out of it?

The NetGear RT314 is quite a good router. Many of here on the forum who have worked with many different routers have liked the NetGear and hold it as one of the better if not the best home market router.

Their NICs are good too. I prefer Intel, 3COM and NetGear NICs.

So what are hubs used for?

Hubs are used to connect computers together on a Local Area Network. Hubs can only be used to share an internet connection when one computer is set-up as a server, where the server has to be on, and connected to the internet for the other PC's to have internet Access.

Hubs do not need a server. They work besy with two ips. If one computer is off the other one can still use the internet. There are two kinds of hubs. there are your 5 port hub which is less expensive but dose not devide the bandworth evenly. Then there is what they call a smarthub which is really used for office which dose split the band worth up evenly and is expensive. Linsky makes them. You best bet would be a switch wich is less expensive then a office hub. You are only running two computers so you could also just use a cross over cable and software program ,but then one computer has to be the server .Same as if you use a router and one Ip. If you do not want to have to have one computer all the time as a server your best bet would be a switch and two ips. It is all in what you want to spend. Good Luck! I use a smart hub and two ips .I get better speed this way then useing 1 ip and a router Plus there is no need to have one computer as the server all the time. If I want one shutdown I can. I have mine set up this way now for four years.Runs great no proublems.Plus the only way a hub will need a server is if you use it with a software program,Which totaly useless. Might as well go with a cross over cable.

Is tweaking your cable connection illegal?

If you mean uncapping (say your cable runs at 10 mbps and you make is run at 30mbps) then yes it is illegal. If you mean tweaking your computer so that is runs faster with cable then no.

Im trying to build my computer but dont have alot of money to spend so i found this mother board that is bundled with a Pentium 3 1ghz processor w/10/100 nic/audio/video AGP 4x. Does this mean it comes with a nic, audio, and video? So that means i dont have to buy a video card or an audio card for it?

it comes with all of that. but its not going to be high quality graphics or sound. But you can update that when you get the $$$. so go ahead and get it.

I would get a new case from the provider. Or you can go to a computer store and tell them to give you a new case for your motherboard. The cases don't cost much. I got mine for $80 with 5 bays.

Can you install a new video card and sound card if you have one built in?

How do you install a AGP video card if you already have a video card built in?

Just take the old one out and put the new one in it's place.

its simple. you just go out and buy any video card. Then you just stick it in the agp or pci slot and plug in your moniter then your done.

Well, than, you build out then No seriously, just unscrew the screws that connects the VIdeo card with the slot, and then just stick the new one in, and then you are done.

TakeruKobayashi - What he is saying is that it is integrated into the motherboard....no AGP card at all.

BTW- Some motherboards with integrated video DON'T have AGP slots, so you might want to check on this.
