hey norm
thanks for the response
very rarely do i turn off and reboot unless i edit register to take changes,and it never happens then-so i dont see that being my prob.,my puter is fairly new also,no other known probs or conflicts going on,only happens once in a while,some weeks it wont even happen then all of a sudden it may happen twice a week. mmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!
any computer builders out there??????

I have that happen now and again on my P166,
but it's because I don't leave it off long enough.
Sometimes I try turning it back on in less than a few seconds, and I believe it's because the ram etc doesn't have enough time to clear. Don't know for sure though. It could be something else, but it only happens if I don't wait a few seconds before turning it back on.
Demagnetization

What you need to do is demagnetize your hard drive. To do this take a large magnet and rub it in a counterclockwise circle around the back of the hard drive. Once this is done, turn the computer back on and you should be ready to go.

Don't follow my instructions.

there are no error beeps or anything, just hangs. hmmm Well for starters when did you last check to see if there were any updates for you CMOS, a fix could solve a minor conflict with the Vid and Main board Bios, since it sounds like its hanging at the video bios test, also is the Vid card on-board or Add in card... (please say Add-in....)
I had this happen to me on my K6-2 a bit back, I just swaped the vid card and it solved it till I got the bios/cmos update. turns out there was some sort of conflict between the 2.. Why? Commands being sent on a first boot and the card wasn't "waking up" properly. The Motherboard handles a first boot and a warm boot differently, I have found. (anyone care to state other wise feel free to argue....

)
give those ideas a whirl and if it doesn't get fixed that way, I think about it more and see what comes up...

So it happens right before it normally beeps

I would say with out actually looking at that it would be a problem with on of the storage devices like one of the hard drives or a cdrom or other ide device, normally when this happens check to see if the cdrom and the hard drives are detected, this can be a sign of ide device going flaky or perhaps and ide or power cable that needs to be reseated.

I would also check in the bios to see if you can set a delay for the hard drive. Sometimes the hard drive doesn't have enough time to spin up and it causes the computer to hang when booting. See
here for a better explanation under "delay IDE initial".
