I have a Dell Precision 420
1ghz P3 w/512 MB RDRAM and it's taking forever for those freaking betahairpins
my K6-2 500 runs 3 units @ the same time faster than it.....
Dell worked fine for a while now it's just incredibly slow, I have re-installed the client already once, and it did not help

Have you checked to see whats running in the background on the Dell. Proprietary puters usually have a ton of garbage running at start up, ctl-alt-del to see whats all running. My 866 pretty well doubleswhat the 500 Cels will fold.
BTW the Betahairpins that are coming out now do take longer than the old ones. they are getting more work per WU now.

Hey balakov10,
I know you probably have done it already.
But did you try to defrag and scandisk your system? I try to do it once a week. It might help

Then it's just like doing a reformat and install.I always do a defrag and scandisk after a new install.
Try a scandisk and Defrag I bet you pick up some speed. zoom Zoom

hmm
ok I've tried it twice now, but everytime I try to use scandisk it locks up....
and I end up having to reboot...
grrr
it's back to slow as balls now, again.
listen to this on the K6-2 500 I run 3 F@H clients at once every one of the clients had @ least 6 frames completed of the new DNA Binding mimic protein, whereas the Dell P3 had no frames completed wtf is up with that, I kinda see what you're saying about the speed and defrag and all, but that's just ridiculous, even without defrag/scandisk it should be a LOT faster...
the only thing that's running in the background is some 3d Soundblaster Live Value soft.

You should only run one F@Home client. wont work proper unless you have multiple processor. The new Dell probably has several applications running as most Proprietary computers do, such as virus software, Do CTRL-ALT-Del to see what all is running. If there are a bunch of Dell sh*t running may be why it wont get through a scan disk, Once you get that puppy fine tuned it should fly. I know my wifes Pack Bell was as slow as mollassus when we first fired it up, after shutting down all the Pack stuff and getting resources up to 90% free it runs great. I knowits a pain, and the best comp wizards all go through it, but just go through things one step at a time. Its real easy the more computer savy you are to forget something simple.
I find when I'm getting stumped on a wierd prob is to just go right back to square 1 and go through the machine and setting step by step. I'm ussually so smart that i've missed something simple.
Just shut down, take a deep breath and fire it up, check Bios, then boot, check for conflicts, system resources, delete from start up whats not needed and so on and so on. a little patience and time you will probably get it, then hit yourself in the forehead and say DOH!!! we all do..lol, me more than others...

How did you make out balakov10?
did you CTRL-Alt-DELETE and End Task or Shut Down all BUT EXPLORE and SYSTRAY and then Run SCANDISK. Then do the same for DEFRAG.

after ctrl-alt-del
and forcing every prog to stop running except for systray, it still locked up I ended up running scandisk and defrag in safe mode

You need to leave EXPLORER and SYSTRAY running
