Remote Desktop Software

Post by Lefty »

Hey guys. I need some suggestions for remote desktop s/w. I would prefer freeware, but I would consider paying so I don't have to explain "click this over a cell phone". I am looking at team-viewer to do this, what do you guys use? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi Lefty.. Happy Thanksgiving to You. :-) I'm not trying to offend anyone by cross pointing, but I think YOSC made this one a sticky in the software forum:
http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread ... tware-list

For family I use Team Viewer from my desktop. They have a free version for non commercial use. For past clients, I have used both Windows Remote Desktop / Terminal Services or VNC server / client (with encryption) but that takes a trip out there to set it up. I think Ultra VNC may have a stand alone like this.

Also.. :-) Just my 2 cents.. On my old Android tablet... for a Windows Remote Desktop client I use 2x and for a VNC client I use VMConsole , both free clients and they are really good. :thumb:

Not enough information given to give a suggestion yet.

Are these for "one time calls"? Where you need to get to someones desk quickly...do something..and probably not have to return? You won't have a need to get back to their computer for months? For these, I just use "join.me". http://join.me
It's free, it's very easy to get to their desktop with a minimum of clicks on both sides...and it's easy to walk them through the steps over the phone. One drawback to this software...you do not see UAC prompts on the hosts PC, you have to anticipate that and have them click "yes". But otherwise...it's free, and very easy for both sides to use. No fancy tools though.

I used to use teamviewer before join.me came out...but if you use the free version frequently...it does track how much you use it and once you reach a certain amount of minutes...it will start cutting you off....nagging you to upgrade to the paid version.

If you have a need to get to computers on a regular basis....or you have a need to get to the computers unattended (with nobody sitting at them)...just use the free version of logmein.

Or do you need to get to servers? I often use remote desktop for that. But remember..with remote desktop, or other stuff like VNC...you have to do firewall stuff like port forwarding, static IP addresses, 'n other stuff. Not worth the time...especially when todays web based remote desktop tools make it so dang quick 'n easy.

At our office we use N-Able for our managed clients, we have our own N-Central server we built..and we use it's tools to get to our clients workstations and servers...it's expensive...but it's part of our whole management product.

Splashtop. It's got a remote viewer and apps for iDevices/Android devices for additional remote access capability.
So trade that typical for something colorful, and if it's crazy live a little crazy!

We also use teamviewer in the office and I am pretty impressed on its performance.
They have free edition which we also used before buying.

Rather to use Teamviewer its better to use an enhanced featured software ..we are using Lepide remote admin in our organisation for remote desktop purpose and its working fine
the best part about this ..its a free tool :)
you can try it.
