BSOD after XP install
BSOD after XP install
I am trying to install XP on an Hp pavilion a642n and after the install, and during the OS configuration process, it blue screens!
I tried running a stress test and it doesn't make it pass a couple of minutes. It just crashes.
According to PC Doctor my HDD, CPU, and MB are OK. I tried swapping video cards and same thing happens...
Need help and thanks in advance!

What stress test is it not passing? Why is it needing xp installed fresh(what has happpened)
Try to disable sound card and see if that might work. Also, if there are any other pci cards in the machine try taking those out while you install xp...a bad modem could do this as well. Are there any bulging/leaking capacitors on the motherboard? PSU any good?

It fails during a part where there is a cube that changes colors and rotates. I also notice that when trying to run other test of the Hiren's Boot CD, some seem to freeze.
I removed the video card and replaced it with another one. The PSU is working fine. I just disabled the sound and removed the modem like you advised. No luck.
Still get this at the end of the BSOD:
0x0000007b (0xf8a80528, 0xc0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
Thanks for the feedback..

The bad news is that I've seen many of these hp s754 motherboards failed...so I don't want to get your hopes up that its fixable.
Latest bios for that model?

Go into Bios and make sure the HDD setting is correct, ACHI vs SATA cause what you have is the system looking for the install but its not found, inaccessible boot device. The only other cause would be you need to install the HDD Drivers when your loading XP or the F6 Prompt during the install, you can find the device drivers on their site, these may work.

I didn't try the bios update or loading the driver method; mainly because I only saw an option to install SCSI RAID. Moving forward, I installed win xp home and no bosd...

Prior to the retail media, I was using a Dell OS reinstall disk. I've used it on tons of install and never had an issue..
What y'all think?

Not sure what you did to get it to work cause you've only said what you "didn't" do vs what you did do. Also using a Dell OS install disk on a HP won't work why didn't you mention that before?
The Dell disk contains a copy of the OS. No drivers or software; just the OS. Like I said, it's been used on other Hp systems and possibly 50 plus machines with different hardware specs.
I've never had an issue. In a wipe and load scenario I usually do the following:
1. Backup drivers/data
2. Format and install OS(using the dell disk)
3. Activate using compliance license
4. Load drivers/data and good to go.
For some apparent reason, this machine didn't like this. Why was the dell disk was the culprit?
Thanks

Cause the Dell disks are designed to be used with a Dell motherboard at which it detects the CD Key already there. There is a big activation issue but even still there could be other reasons. Best to just use a full regular OEM copy of whichever your wanting to load of either XP Home or XP Pro 32/64bits.
