My router log shows that authorized-scan1.security.home.net tries to access my port 119 several times a day everyday. What are they looking for?

NNTP Network News Transfer Protocal Port 119
What they're looking for, I have no idea!

I would bet they are looking to see if any @home users are running a news server.

Hi conical
Both blebs and Dement are correct. All @Home(s) uses NNTP Network News Transfer Protocal Port 119 to scan for Servers.....these servers eat up the bandwidth and creates a smaller pipe for the others on the same node.
If you have your PC on 24/7, sometimes they will break the connection...in my case (unattended) the router just re-connects. So if I am doing a download it is usually not affected.
I wouldn't worry about it
