Routers with Multiple SSIDs or Guest Zone

Post by Shad0w99 »

Hi there,

I'm looking for a realiable and affordable router that can support multiple SSIDs or the guest zone feature. I have heard that some routers like the Buffalo WHR-Hp-G54 and Linksys WRT54GL combined with DD-WRT can run multiple SSIDs. Does anybody have any experience with this? Are they functionally different from the guest zone feature seen on the expensive D-Link routers?

I'm more interested in its wired performance than wireless. I dont need gigabit.

Thank you

Not too functionally different.
Various options you can do with this. One of them is client isolation..each wireless client can be put in their own VLAN, so that other wireless clients cannot mess with them. This is a good option for such environments as internet cafes/coffee shops/hotels.

Other uses, different SSIDs..say Wireless1 for your primary office network, so that laptops can access office LAN resouces. And a second SSID, say Wireless2Open....for wireless guests to access the internet, yet they cannot access your office LAN resources if you setup that SSID on another VLAN.

Hi Shad0w99,

Yes, I have specification of the Buffalo WHR-HP-G54DD and DrayTek Vigor2820n. One of the model is Buffalo WHR-HP-G54DD and the other model is DrayTek Vigor2820n. After looking through the specifications and features. Decided to get DrayTek Vigor2820n.

Buffalo WHR-HP-G54DD:

- Support multiple SSIDs
- Wireless G
- 1 x 10/100Mbps RJ45 WAN port
- 4 x 10/100Mbps LAN port
- QoS
- wireless - Segmenting guest and other access
- SPI firewall

Vigor2820n:

- support multiple SSIDs
- Wireless N
- Wireless Rate limit (QoS)
- Dual WAN (ADSL2/2+ integrated modem and RJ45) load balancing and failover
- wireless - Segmenting guest and other access
- comes with 1 x Gigbit switch port and 3 x 10/100 Mbps port
- SPI firewall
- 3.5G usb modem support

Try any one of it. It may be give the best performance. :)

I have both HP 54G and WRT54GL with DD-WRT and a Dlink DIR 655 and yes, you can achieve the same guest zone with a VLAN partition in DD-WRT - also a VLAN per every client as well.

There are a few ways to do this in DD WRT or OpenWRT/X-WRT.

I can say that the Auto QoS of the Dlink is really amazing and no ports need be configured - but I also like the granular control of Tomato firmware. It is also a rock with P2P and VPN connections. DD WRT is a more hands on approach and is more powerful and robust for the networking guru. I would go for the HP G54 for better wireless performance and removable antenna - but the initial flashing is "harder" than the 54GL.
