what is the point? an e-smack on the hand? do people use them (obviously some do) and why? what do you think it will accomplish?

I don't think they're very relevant to a general discussion community (which I think is perhaps one of the more active forums on SG now). I think the intention of rep points is more useful for a community where information is provided. A user can build up a reputation for being a useful member of the community, either by providing good answers or being generally helpful. I guess it's there to help somebody gauge how much faith/trust to place in an answer given by any single user.

Instead, in the context of SG's discussion forum, they're handed out, usually for posts or threads that other readers strongly agree, or disagree with. /shrugs
