Any SoCal advice?

I've been working and living in the great PNW my entire life, but now the career says it may be time to move. It would be a big change for the family, so we approach it with some trepidation. Long Beach is gonna be the workplace, and I'd like to keep the commute within 30 minutes.
What do you locals say about:
Housing
Crime
Traffic
Outdoor recreation (biking, camping, hiking, etc.)
Youth sports
Anyone know a good Realtor?
Schools (not high on the list, because we homeschool, but still important)

I live in Long Beach. Stay away from West and North Long Beach areas. If you can locate anywhere in the East Long Beach / West Orange County area you should be ok. Of course there are pockets of "bad" neighborhoods but they're easy to avoid.
Some cities to look at...
Los Alamitos, Cypress, Seal Beach (google these cities and look for other cities nearby)
BTW... where will you be working? (pm me if you want)
Just to let you know. If you want to keep the commute within 30 minutes you're going to have to be within 15 - 20 miles from your work at the most. Rush hour traffic is not nice.

I would NEVER live down there again,

Just stay out of Compton, they like giving out big tickets and bullets.

I'm in the port business, so I'd be working on the waterfront in San Pedro. Seal Beach is very expensive, no? I'd heard that Orange County is the place to be, but also that there are some *OK* areas within Pedro itself.

Catalina island is nice lol
trying to keep your drive down to 30 min will really limit you it has taken 30 min to go a block b4 on the 5 and 405.

LOL,,,that's debatable ,but if it makes you feel better to call it central cal,by all means it is whatever you want to call it !
what I know is whatever you call it,it beats the hell out of that area between Bakersfield and the Tijuana border.

Near San Pedro there are a lot of unincorporated areas, meaning no real order. Cities/Areas like Harbor Gateway aren't too nice. You may want to look for some nice areas in Torrance.

Yes, yes it does (although I did just have a nice trip through Mojave and Death Valley, but I would not want to live there all year)

hey now bite your tongue i live in the Mojave and its not that bad but i will be glad to get back to the middle of the country.
