My only concern (I know nothing about them) is that I don't want to pay for a service or any kind of monthly fee. It would get pretty light use and would not be purchased as a necessity. I don't mind having to purchase a one time software package but that's about as involved as I'd like to get with it.

Garmin! I have a Nuvi360, little older now, but I love it. The Nuvi line is good stuff, theres no monthly fee on these things, unless you get a traffic thingy for them(not worth it).

I like the Nuvi cuz its portable so you can switch it from car to car or hide it when you park.

I have had the Garmin Nuvi 660 for about a year now,I absolutely love it]/b],I use it everyday for work as well as fun sometimes,it has an endless list of features,it has never steered me wrong,
it has bluetooth(builtin mic),
it has an FM transmitter ,
SD slot,
address book,
phone dialer,
MP3 player,
FM TMC traffic receiver(with paid service)(very cool if you drive a lot in a high traffic area like you do),
Fodor travel guide(which is way cool )
touchscreen,
JPEG picture viewer,

it's an amazing tool, look at the Garmin line, look at the better ones though,up in the line.(for features)
