The cyclists were heading east Sunday on the Trans-Canada highway just outside of Virden, Man., west of Winnipeg, when they were struck from behind by a Honda Civic driven by a 27-year-old man in broad daylight.

Something doesn't seem right about this accident 4 people riding bikes, 2 are killed and the driver is not charged?.. and No statement from the driver?

hmmmmm..... maybe the drivers Dad is a cop?

I hate it when storys like thease, don't have any information from the driver.

That story is terrible. The charges often not severe enough, but no charges at all?

I cycle quite a bit, and read the slowtwitch.com triathlon forum daily. I see stories like this far too often.

This story came up a month ago when man admitted to killing a cyclist on a road I ride often. .26 blood alcohol, plus it was a hit and run and he washed his car and bought a replacement headlight before the police caught up with him. He faces 16 years in prison despite the cover up attempt.

Is it me or does the whole article seem a little unsympathetic, and like it's blaming the cyclists... to the point where it seems to insinuate they were being reckless.

yeah thats what so messed about it.

They did not "have a permit"? WTF?. Why the hell would 4 peep need a permit to ride bikes on a hwy?. I bet if you actaully tried to get a permit city hall would tell you one does not exist.

I would defiantly get a lawyer on it!

It's horrible and the driver should be questioned and they should press charges BUT

During events the highway is closed.

In my opinion cyclists shouldnt be on highway when the average speed is 130km/h.

Yes I go every year to 100mile house, Prince George, Quesnel --> (Barkeville), Fraser lake, Alaska Highway and I dont see a single cyclist on the road the only exceptions are cyclists very close to towns and not in middle of nowhere.

Yeah I'm old fashioned but my driver ED taught that its always illegal to kill someone with a motor vehicle, intentionly or unintentionly

As to Randys point,
In the states anyway, you can get a parade permit for any charity fund rasing event (and are required to by most states and municipalitys) and a police escort along the route no matter the number of people involved.
The lone fireman who just walked from NY to Ca. to raise money for 9 11 firefighters had an escort the entire way.

To Rivas not sure about BC but here anyway,
Cyclest llegally have the same rights and responcabiliteys to use of the highway as any other form of transportation.
With the exception of innerstates or highways with mandatory minimum speeds.

Not to belittle the fact that the guy who hit them is a real f/en jerk that needs some prison time. If for nothing else than for his cavalier attatude about takeing a life.

The judge should have amended that punks sentance by adding a few years to it, for the audacity of trying to turn a tragedy into a "cash cow" the minute he was convicted.
Causing bodly harm with a vehicle dew to intoxication or during the commision of a crime is punishable by 25yrs, he was found guilty of both.
