Hello lately my internet has been going crazy. When i try to download even small files or load certain websites my internet decides to just basically die. For example if i am downloading a file it will be downloading at 500 kb/sec or so then after about a minute the DL speed will just start dropping and eventually hit 0 kb/sec and even though it says the internet is still connected and the signal strength is displayed at very good; no internet pages will load and the file will just stay at 0 kb/sec until i either click repair the wireless connection or turn off the wireless switch on my laptop. Or even if im watching a video on youtube it will load like halfway then just stop loading and my internet stops working.
I am guess either something is conflicting with my IP address or some kind of latency issue.

...And yes i have recently updated the firmware on my drivers

First thing, I want you to do is grab a free visual utility called ping plotter.
http://www.pingplotter.com/download.html

Also, familiarize yourself with DSLReports test tools, particularly the line quality test.
http://www.dslreports.com/tools


Now use ping plotter and ping 192.168.100.1 and then your isp's website, ie if you use verizon, http://www.verizon.com.

Then run the DSLReports tool I linked, you will have to register there first.


This is to see if packet loss is related to your problem.

Other than that, if you use cable can you get your modem levels?

No packet loss so seems ok. Are you sure you are supposed to be using AOL through qwest? thought you had to use qwest as the ISP for qwest DSL?

Only thing that worries me, is pt-mtca18.dial.aol.com indicates it might be a dial up hop, maybe just poorly named or never changed from dial up days, but, make sure your internet explorer is not set to DIAL up for connection.

Yes i checked and i have AOL Broadband as my ISP and Qwest is my DSL

here; this is my speed test showing that i have AOL:



and no its not set on dial up connection

see the thing is this doesnt constantly happen or anything it just happens every once and awhile; it seems to happen when i try to load too many things. So it might just be im maxing my bandwidth out? does that sound right?

If you are running a speed test it should be the only app using bandwidth otherwise why test? I don't know what you are paying for hopefully 768 down in which case, I suppose that looks ok. Hard to say with an intermittent issue like this.

is it possible tho tat maybe it might have something to do with me downgrading from vista to XP? maybe my wireless card built for vista doesnt "like" XP.
