Hi all..

I want to upgrade my motherboard. also that means cpu and memory
as well..
My current system is a AMD Athlon XP 1.7 gig. One gig of of DDR.
And a ATX case and power supply (500w +)

I'm just trying to increase my speed over all.. I don't need the latest cpu and mobo out there. I'm just trying to keep cost "low", while gaining some more processing power.. I also would like to stay with AMD for the cpu.
Any New Egg suggestions?

Staying with AMD is a waste both for the power you can get right now and the upgradability path.

Be more specific with price, every $10 would get a better upgrade of some sort.

See, what I do, is that I do not upgrade all of the time..
I basically stay with what I got for a "long" time. I know you guys
are always on the "cutting edge" of tech...
I had to re-think and re-phrase my
question a bit.. I want to put together a faster system that I have

and I could buy one gig stick of ddr 400..
So that would cost me like $106 without shipping..
This other case that I have.. has a 300w ATX PS in it..
I'm hoping that is enough power...
It's not dual core happy.. but its way better then what i got.
It also has a PCI Express slot.. which is nice.

The sempron 3000+ is 1.8ghz, its AMD's version of the celeron.

avoiding cutting edge for about 200-250 you could still snag a 2.33-2.66ghz core 2 duo and mobo.

If your budget is 60 bucks for mobo and cpu then 100mhz up from your athlon is about all you can do, and even then It might not be faster as urs is an athlon and this is a sempron.

These would be the cheapest parts I've seen people buy and be happy with...

Probably a Sparkle or FSP power supply. Cheap, but work decently enough.

RAM is all cheap, probably find one with a large rebate.

The way you are describing your price range makes me wanna tell you to just get a dell and slap a big coupon from dealcatcher on it. When you get that cheap its actually the best bang for the buck you can get.

the e2140 that shagster posted is an o/c'ing beast...you will be able to run 3 ghz easy with it.

Ya, both Shagster and YOS had excellent suggestions.. I really don't OC my stuff... The first boards that I ever OC were back in the day 486 DX 33 to 66 MHZ.

I just need something "really" cheap.. I know this probally isn't exciting as it is for
me.. but I'm pretty happy about all of the stuff below.. if I made the right choices for everything to work right.

LOL Ya.. never did any business with "Elite Group" mobo company before..
their company is ISO9001 certified and have some other another Quality certification..
..but well.. I guess we'll see.

not bad considering the price...I've actually had good luck with ECS boards in the past. Not a lot of goodies but they have run fine for me for the most part.

Leaky capacitors are my greatest fear.. even if I am not going to O.C. it

For the money I think that's a great setup! Certainly better than what you have now.

I will man, thanks.. you know the board that you have in your sig' is the same as I got.. I have that Asus model.. the deluxe one with a Athlon XP 2100+ (1.7 GHZ) cpu in it.. It's a great board.. and running XP, Vista and Linux on it is great... but just I need to make something a bit better for Win2003 (SQL 2005, IIS 6.0) and Vista Ultimate plus some other networking stuff I am working on for future job advancement. (I hope)

I know that Intel is the fater cpu out right now.. but AMD has always been good to me for many years. I still have my AMD 286 chip somewhere around here.. LOL.. AMD has allways give me anything I needed including books with internal specs, case badges.. everything.

Another very weird thing happened tonight.. is that my company rolled out new client workstations on are LAN, with the same cpu specs that I bought! LOL.. only 2 gigs instead of one.. but that something that I can add later.
Also, I want to buy at a later date, a PCIe 16x video card.. the on board video will suffice for now..

AMD has had some good lines, hell I'm running a 4400+ X2 from them while advising people to get intel setups.

The thign is AMD has never been able to match intel at chipsets, now intel has learned from AMD's popularity growth, and been pushed to compete, and boy did they ever. Cheap, powerful, and the good chipsets, all in one choice.

AMD needs to find a way to compete again, or the prices may not stay good, working with IBM might be the answer.

The only people who lose out in the competition are the ones that say "oh this company treated me good, I'll stay loyal to them"

Meh .. companies that can give me close to ,or more bang for my buck, for less... is the true winner, at least as far as I am concerned..

Well it wasnt meant directly at you, it would have been if you bought that 60 dollar sempron combo, lol.

But best bang for the buck is on intel's side as well.

I see your point, when comparing speed and price.. I'm still not ruling out
AMD for making a come back.

Well I hope not, without a comeback Intel will be able to raise prices again. I really dont want to be paying 600 bucks for a buget CPU.

IBM should be able to help AMD, but AMD's big comeback looks like its resting on their CPU/GPU combo thing.

I was in a quite a few computer stores (well they were selling 60% off DVD+R DL but limit only 1 per customer) and they were saying AMD is close to the bankrupcy?

I doubt it.

I got my my mobo and cpu, pretty easy install, just wiping out the hard drive now.. I have to keep a eye on the power supply, because I questioning if I need a big one. This one is 350w Other then that so far so good..
