Faster new cable provider; Linksys slower

Post by sgearhart »

I have a Linksys BEFSR41 and I'm using it for a Dell desktop and an IBM laptop. I was using Cablevision as my broadband provider and getting around 4MB/sec through the Linksys (which was also serving my son's Mac). I moved and now have Comcast.

When I plug my Dell directly into the cable modem, I get between 5-7MB/sec, but when I put the router in between, it drops to - at best - 2MB/sec.

I'm ready to decide that the router has died (4-5 years old) and to go buy a new one, but thought I would ask before spending the money. (All router settings are as they were out of the box.)

I need to add another PC to the mix and I rely on this LAN to make a living. Any better routers out there?

TIA

Yeah the old sr41 series is long in the tooth now...
Plenty of faster ones out there, Linksys WRT600n, DLink 655 series..are amongst the top performers.

Thanks for the recommendations, but I'd rather not pay the extra for wireless when I have no need for it. What's the best wired router for a SOHO these days...how about the Cisco 851?

Cisco is subsidized by Linksys. They most likely contract through the same manufacturers on their router builds. I would say "stay away".
Not trying for a ban on product placement, but I now have a D-*ink, all I do is video game. Having my D-*ink connected to the internet I can get speed clocks of 16000-22000Kbps @ Speakeasy.com. My BEFSR41-81 and that first model I can't remember the name of that took an 80mph split finger fast router to the wall!

For SOHO/small biz needs....wired, I like the Linksys/Cisco RV0 series..RV082 or RV016. Fast, solid, decent VPN abilities, etc.
