Router + Switch Combo?

Hey guys, I'm sorry if it's a commonly asked question but I couldn't find it under search.

I am currently running through a hub and a router. I brought my computer elsewhere causing me to manually make a hole in my ceiling to reach it. I am trying to expand upon my room without creating another hole just for another ethernet cable. My question is, is it possible to run through a hub, then a router, then a switch in my room? And if so, what kind of switch you suggest?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, but I would change your config. I would suggest router--->switch--->hub. GB switches are getting rather cheep nowadays so I would pick up one of those. Brand doesn't really matter with switches.

I don't know much but I assumed a hub was the one the ISP provided? And that only has one slot which I connect to the router. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, is that set up from router to switch to hub faster? Or why would it benefit me/my internet?

Alright thanks, so

ADSL Modem
\/
Router -- PC1, PC2
\/
Switch -- PC3

That's all good I suppose?

How many LAN ports does your router have? Looking at your diagram..only 3x PCs...most broadband routers have 4x LAN ports...I don't see the need for an additional hub or switch.

My router does have four, but as I've said, the third PC was brought upstairs which required me to create a manual hole and set up through my ceiling, and running another wire to my router would create another whole mess. So I was just wondering if expanding without the use of more drills and stuff was completely possible.

Switch or no switch..you still need to run ethernet cable.

If you run an ethernet cable from this 3rd PC..to some switch..and from this switch...to one of the LAN ports of your router...why not take away the switch and second cable..and just run a single cable from the 3rd PC to your router. The switch is not eliminating the need to run ethernet in some fashion from PC3 to the router.

Or go wireless, but then you would have to spend more cash. Drill hole or spend more money. Those are your options.

Okay, thanks for all this feedback and suggestions, but just simply, is it possible to obtain an internet connection with that set up?

will it solve your problem? We don't know, becuase you haven't adequately defined it.

absolutely possible, it just does not make a whole lot of sense why there would be a hub sitting before the router....

go wireless, it will make your life a whole lot easier.
