I changed my routers and now I can't connect to the internet

Post by Jin »

I decided to replace my old router (Microsoft MN-700) to a new one (Linksys WRT54GS). I followed the steps on the CD that came with the Linksys and everything was fine except I don't have a internet connection. I don't know where the problem is comming from. I'm able to ping to the router, but that's it. I tried pinging to linksys.com, but that didn't work. If I plug in the MN-700 then I'll get a internet connection. Any ideas?

Thanks!

When you plugged the new router in did you turn off the modem for 3-5 mins, then turn it back on so that it would refresh and grab a new IP for the MAC addy on your new router?

Yeah, the program on the Linksys CD told me to do that. I did it twice and still didn't get an internet connection.

First throw away that cd that came with the Linksys and do everything yourself by logging into the router. Turn off your pc, then unplug your modem and the Linksys router for a minute or two, then plug the power back into the router first and wait 1 minute then plug the power back into the modem and wait 1 minute then power back on your pc.

Tried what you said mnosteele52 and that didn't work. I'm wondering now, do I need a ethernet adapter? Currently, I have the modem connected to the router (MN-700 for now) and I have this computer wired to the router. But I'm not using a ethernet adapter; instead, I have it wired to the computers LAN port. Does that matter? I mean I'm getting an internet connection when I'm using the MN-700 router, but not with the Linksys router.

Have you setup the router to match the settings of your MN700 router?

Yes and no. I don't know if Linksys does this, but on the MN-700 router I'm able to decide whether or not I want the router to obtain a DNS address automatically. I can't seem to find the same options on the Linksys and all I see is an option to input 3 static DNS addresses. I don't know if what I just typed matters, but that's the main difference (that I can tell) between the MS router and the Linksys. I've changed the IP address of the Linksys to the same one as the MN-700. I've also changed the starting and ending IP addresses for DHCP on the Linksys to match the MN-700.
