I'm having a sound issue with my older computer my wife uses to play games on. Its a P3 with 768 Ram and 57Gb free space. Its running XP Home. It has sound for every program but for some reason it has stopped playing the windows sounds on start-up or shut down. The sounds scheme is set on Windows default. No matter what changes i make, It still will not have sound on start-up or shutdown. I'm not sure but i think it started when i read a post in here about changing windows theme to black. I tried that and did not like it so i deleted it but now when you click on start or any programs, They highlight in black. I have no idea why that is happening either. What bothers me the most is just the no sound ONLY on start-up and shutdown. Any ideas why this could happen?

This is only a guess bro, but worth a try.

I saw a similar prob on a win98 machine after the underwater theme had been used. Although the theme had been changed back to default from the underwater one, all the icons on the desktop and the cursor were stuck on the underwater theme appearance.

control panel>display

appearance tab- set everything to windows classic, and check the "effects" and "advanced" tab settings for anything wrong.

themes tab- set to windows classic

Then in Sounds and Audio devices... try setting sound scheme to "no sound"

make sure you hit apply when making the changes.

reboot. then try changing the sound scheme to to windows default, apply and reboot again.

if that works you can change your appearances & stuff.

I tried all you suggested and nothing changed. I even went down the list of sounds and clicked on each one and did a preview of the sounds and it played each windows sound. Any other suggestions? Thanks

How about a link to that post you mentioned?

Did you try uninstall the sound card from device manager then reboot? Might wanna back up the sound card drivers first. Try updating the those drivers?

Thanks ghetto, I'll keep trying to figure it out. As far as the link goes to changing the windows theme, It came from this site. I'll try to track it down on here again..

In the run box type in "services.msc" and scroll down, make sure Windows Audio service is running.

Yes the windows audio service is running. Like i said, I have all sounds but the windows shutdown and start-up. I have been messing with it since my last post and still have not been able to make the default SD& S-U sounds to work.. I noticed when i went into the windows media file, All the sounds had a musicmatch jukebox emblem beside them. Could that have something to do with it?

file associations might have something to do w/ it... maybe that jukebox app needs to load first and that's why no sound at start up & shut down. The app might shut down before win does.

Try fixing your file associations.

I'm not familiar w/ that jukebox thing. I'm on my way to work, I'll see check back tonite and if necessary see what I can google tonight.

I deleted the whole program to see if it would do any good and it didn't. Now it has windows media player symbols beside them...I'm not really sure what you meant by fixing the file associations? Maybe you could explain that to me a little more. Sorry to be such a pain, gehtto But thanks for trying to help

Looks like uninstalling that app fixed the file associations.

Tools>Folder Options>File Types

then when you highlight one of the registered file types, for example MP3, you'll see where it says "opens with" and you'll see Windows Media Player as the default app. You can change the default app for any file, and even create registered file types of your own.

or you can right click a file and select "open with" ... choose the app to open with, and you can set that as the default.

either way that's how.

Too bad I don't have a solution for your problem though...
