line filter?

line filter?

hi, i'm new except for the occassional reading.

was just wondering if a bad line filter could make my download speeds drop. they've been normal until the last couple of days. now they've dropped to less than half. trying to find culprits.......

you are asking if a sub-band {bad line?} filter can slow you down if it fails? could do, i guess if it's letting in/egerss in your line. i have seen very very few fail though. what does 192.168.100.1 say? under diagnostics or signal

Make sure everything you have plugged into a phone jack has a filter on it except the modem. A defective set or CPE may and will cause a drop in speed, also a line fault with also affect your bandwidth. Distance from the C.O. greater than 4.7km can affect speed unless that distance is shortened by a remote or a stinger at your cross box that your dial tone feeds from.

A quick way to check your sets is to unplug them all and check your speed. If it is better with everything unplugged, plug everything back in one set at a time, testing inbetween for speed. You will find the culprit if it is a set issue (including a bad filter, very rare that it is a filter though).

Your ISP should be able to give you a line test, for Distance, Metallic Troubles and Bandwidth. In Canada there are 10 different profiles for High Speed which are considered High Speed. Your ISP will pick the best profile based on your line condition and distance. If you don't complain about it then they will pick the lowest profile and consider the matter closed. Complain and they may send a tech out to shorten your loop, by putting you through a remote or fix any metallic troubles you may have.

Just a quick note, there are alot of posts in this forum where people are having problems with DSL. I have been fixing DSL issues for Bell Canada now for more than 6 years. 9 out of 10 troubles I have been on have been caused by either:

1. Not filtering Sets, Fax Machines or Satellite Recieviers.
2. Metallic troubles on your local loop including your Inside Wire (ISW)
3. Defective sets with a reading below >3.3 MOhms across the Tip and Ring (green and red wire)
4. Defective modem (ie. Speed Stream 5200) or SLAM.
5. Incorrectly provisioned service from your ISP, ie. >4.7km from the source (distance issue)
6. Incorrect SLAM port at the Remote or Access Node
7. Incorrect profile setting ie. Basic, High Speed and Ultra

Only after I checked the above information would I start messing with MTU's and all that good stuff. It probably isn't you, it's your ISP?
