USB drive problem

Recently reformatted with a copy of XP with SP2. Now my Kingston USB stick won't work. Windows sees the hardware but says it's not functioning properly. pop it in another machine andit works fine.

Went to the Kingston site but they only have 98SE drivers and say XP should recognize it as it is without drivers.

Any ideas?

Thanks :)

You try anything else in your usb ports? Download the usb 2.0 drivers? check device manager make sure theres not a problem?

Go and get all the windows updates first then try it again?

Update...have gotten all Windows Updates. The front USB ports still won't read either a SanCruz or kingston memory stick. Will read an Olympus camera via USB just fine though:confused. Device Manager recognizes the USB sticks as a device but says there are no drivers installed for it.

The same USB sticks that won't read from either of the front USB ports work fine in the back ports that are hardwired to the Asus P4p800.

What USB 2.0 drivers are you referring to?

thanks Rainbow

I guess you should check your Windows Firewall

With the USB drive plugged in...remove it in Device Manager..then physically remove the drive (pull it out). Then remove your USB controllers in Device Manager...reboot...let it reload the USB controller drivers. Bounce the rig again and try your thumb drive.

A lot of times when rebuilding (reinstalling) Windows XP..the USB 2 drivers don't install. Removing the controllers in device manager, and letting them reinstall, will usually get it done right.

Sounds good, I'll give that a try when I get off work tonight.

Thanks for the tip :)

:nope:

Will try it again in the morning but followed your suggestions, rebooted, same issue.

What motherboard/chipset is this?

USB thumb drives, for Windows 2K/XP, normally do not need drivers.

Scott, it's an Antec Sonata.

YeOlde, my system has an AsusP4p800 w/ 865PE chipset.

and yeah, I know they don't normally need drivers, that's what's pissing me off so bad. I've tried 2 thumb drives...neither works in the front ports but they both work fine in the rear ports.

I tried my Oly dig camera in the front ports and it works fine, no problems at all. Tried everything you mentioned in your other post but didn't seem to make any difference.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated, thanks :)

There are known problems with the front USB ports on some Antec cases. Either the wiring to the mobo, or the PCB. Something about not being 2.0 compliant.

Google it, you'll see. Antec has sent repair kits to some in the past.
