Staying connected, but dataflow stops on cable

i can stay connected ok, but every few minutes my dataflow just stops for no apparent reason, even when i am not running any other applications while connected, and even after reinstalling tcp/ip and the nic, it still happens. Can someone tell me what this might be?

Two questions:
1.) Did you contact your ISP?
2.) Do you use a Linksys Router?

i have checked with my isp, they don't know what it could be, even had a tech come out!
no i am not using one of those routers.

The same thing happens to me. I am interested in the response asking if a Linksys router is used. I use a linksys router. Could that stop dataflow on my net?

OK. I have the same problem. My ISP (Adelphia) gave me two possible reasons:
1.) Linksys router is not working properly.
2.) The web sites that I visit are busy as they claim that it is not their servers.
There are quite a few people that have this same problem but I have yet to find any resolutions on the boards.

I run a Linksys and have had no problems. I have also installed 8 and keep in touch with my clients and haven't had any problems. I even know that about 3 are running with no firmware upgrade.

WebWoman:
Go over to the Networking Forum as I have posted our question under a recent Linky heading (something about it sucking).

I also have this problem. Tech support (Adelphia) is clueless to what the problem is (I think they know what it is but won't fix it). I do know it is not my PC or the Linksys, because it will happen with any PC I connect directly to the cable modem. My problem looks to be an upstream problem only. (modem can't transmit but can receive)

For those of you having trouble with pauses, what protocols do you have installed in addition to TCP/IP?
Thanks,

You no Im sick and ****ing tired of people complaining about the Linksys. They just say that to make you believe. That is the most unlikely cause of all of this! You people, they would say the same thing about a NetGear. Someone please step forward saying it sucks ONLY if they have used it. Thank you my god!

Kip,
My Linux and Win2k boxes are only using TCP/IP.
My problem seems to be with the default gateway that is assigned. Running a ping with the -t option to the gateway IP address will show it "Request timed out" every 5 minutes or so.

That would be packet loss. Have you contacted your provider? Does you get packet loss when pinging your gateway?

this is going to sound nutzzzz. Ask your ISP to check if the Katelin, (forgive my spelling)that they use to check the reverse in the headend is properly filltered from the modem carriers. we had this problem once and it threw everybody out of wack. If you need more details let me know ill go through my notes.......

you need to provide more info what to he lights on your modem do when you lose connectivity? what do you do to get connectivity back? play with th modem? run winipcfg release all renew all and get your ip address back? wait then your connectivity comes back after time? this would be helpful to know are your pings getting request timed out one or two at a time or in a big long continouse bunch? are you using a firewall? have you tried setting your ip statically and seeing if this stops the problem?

Speed.God if you could dig up that information, it would be most helpful.
rodrod5, my modem lights and etc. are all working properly. The time outs can be as short as 30 seconds or as long as over a minute in duration.

Have you tried a different nic? I had nic that did that a long time ago. I had the tec out about three times and he could not figure out what was causeing this. So just out of wandering if it was the nic. I replace and my problem stop. Just a thought!

so glad to see that this problem is being addressed.
to rodrod5,
all modem lights are solid. when i click on a link, the hourglass is turning but the lights stay solid. then after 15-30secs delay, the data transfer lites start flickering on the modem and the link is made.
everything is fine for a few minutes then it stalls again. is this a windows configuration problem or an ie5 problem?
using win98se and ie5

I had this problem. Check out your domain and see if its in the right area. Mine was coming up in illinois and i live in michigan. Took them forever to listen to me. But i eventually talked to a tech that knew what was up and had the problem fixed....i spent about three months arguing with over 20 techs who didnt even know the difference between bits and bytes. I'm actually thinking about applying for a job with @Home since i know more than their techs do, and ive set up a couple LANs which is more than most their phone techs can say.
