Brandon Balch has launched a crusade to change Georgia law after learning that his 13-year-old daughter got married in Georgia to a 14-year-old boy. Georgia law allows minors to marry without parental consent if the bride-to-be is pregnant. A similar statue in Florida gives a judge discretion to issue a marriage license to minors without parental consent if the couple is expecting a child. Balch and his sister, Sharon Cline, have spent the last 18 months writing letters to lawmakers in both states urging them for tougher requirements before minors can wed. If he had known of his daughter's plan to marry, Balch would have appeared in court and opposed the marriage, he said. When his 13-year-old daughter got married, she was living with Balch's ex-wife in Alabama. ''Most states require the consent of parents,'' he said. ``At no time did they live together and function as a married couple. They both lived with their mothers, neither could work or drive.'' That's way too young IMO. They are both still growing up, changing immensely from year to year, and have much maturity yet to attain. That is an unwise decision on their part, allowed by an even unwiser law.
Heck, I knew 2 guys in the military from Alabama that got brought girls <18 to base as their wives. I think both were still in high school IIRC. One was 16 i think.
My son ... ask for thyself another internet connection, for that which I leave is too slow for thee
My cousins great grandparents at 12 and 14 homesteaded in Arizona. Built their own house, cut all the lumber for it, milled the lumber, and moved the lumber (with mules). They were cattle ranchers so they were also surgeons, farmers, laborers, equestrians, and butchers. They hunted, farmed, cooked, built, doctored, slaughtered, protected, and everything else one might have to do living on their own without power and modern tools.
At twelve and fourteen they knew more about survival than I do now or probably ever will. Apparently he has pictures of them and you think the 16 year old kids are in their forties, and would be more than willing to shoot you if you looked at them wrong.
I am not saying that this makes it right for people that young to get married, I am more thinking how different it is now than when those marriage laws were put on the books.

Ancient Egypt? EVERYONE got married at 13, they were doin the hump at 11. It was so much more "evil" in ancient times than now, you wouldve had a heart attack.

I've heard this before, but have never seen anything solid on it. Do you have anything you can support that with? I'm not saying it's incorrect, i've just yet to see anything myself concerning it. Thanks.
Im shocked that the people here that are religious are acting like this is such a nasty thing to do. Maybe they didn't want to have a child out of Wedlock?
I personally think they are way too young for sex or marriage but perhaps their personal beliefs forbade them from having a child without being married.

Personal beliefs should NOT be above the well being of a child, under no circumstances. That's like the Jehovahs Witness couple that let their kid die because they didn't believe in doctors/medicine.

if they are gonna have a kid prey...they can no longer be children anymore. As sorry as it is, they are going to have to learn to be adults/parents now.
Its a little late to be protective now. The parents should have done that before.
