Can't boot into windows.
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: system32\DRIVERS\nvcchflt.sys

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."

That's the error I'm having when try to boot into windows. Is there a way to fix this?

Thank you.

Hi Izzo, I did what it told. After I insert xp disc in. It said it will reinstall windows over the old one and I will lose everything. That's almost the same as reformat. Reformat is the last option that I will take into consider if all else fails.

Thanks.

What changed on your system before this error started? I cannot find any info on that particular file on ms site - googling for it comes back with several video card/gaming forums.

New video card installed?

hi Cyberskye, the drives are nvidia nf4 chipset. I accidently clean it out last nite and now can't get into windows without it.

I am no expert when it comes to video cards/gaming issues, but I would try and boot into safe mode and uninstall the video card/drivers. Then reboot and reinstall (or install the new ones).

Good luck,

Skye

If you have a second computer nearby, slave this hard drive into that one....and copy over that particular file.

Or if no second computer around, perform a "mirror install" of Windows XP, installed to a different directory such as C:\WinTwo or something like that...enough to boot to desktop, and copy a fresh file over into the original system32 directory...then undo your dual boot option once original install is up and running.

If you have a spare video card handy (even an old PCI card), replace your present card and reboot.
That should work as long as your replacement isn't the same card.

Once you get into windows you may be able to reinstall the NV drivers.
Shut down and put the NV card back.

I'm out of luck. I have no spare desktop nor vid card to try it out. But if i'm able to install the chipset thru floppy or cd-rom.. it prolly could fix the problem??

You can also use the windows install cd to enter the recovery console and use the "disable" command to disable the driver.

In your case the command would look like this:

disable nvcchflt

edit - Hit [enter] after typing the command, and reboot. If new errors occur, note them.

NV is usually Nividia (video card, possibly integrated), I could be wrong though.

Lets hope it's not mobo drivers

hi norm, after I disable nvcchflt, it let me boot into windows. I then install the nf4 chipset and reboot. After reboot it saying i'm missing/corrupt PCI.sys file.

What's next?

Do the same for PCI.sys. Enter recovery console and:

disable pci

But, before you do that, from recovery console type

chkdsk /r

Hit [enter] after the command and wait. It'll check the drive for errors and it will take a long time depending on the size of the drive.

It appears to me that your HD is starting to fail. When you get up and running, do a backup of important files and get yourself a new drive.

edit oops

The command is chkdsk c: /r
