Hey all I've just purchased a new MB and PCI-E video card to go with it.

MB = ASUS P5GD1
Video Card = MSI 6600GT PCI-E

Problem being is my power supply wont hook up to the board. The board has a 24pin connector while my PS has only 20pin. I found on the web that ther are 20-24pin converters. Should I use one of these or get a new PS. Its a 400Watt power supply, so i'd rather not replace it, if possible.

Any advice would be appreciated.

The 20-pin connector will work in the 24-pin mobo connector, you just need to line up pin1 on the connector to the proper pin1 location on the mobo. Just make sure the PS is a quality unit, e.g., Antec, etc., and not a "cheapo" "400-watt" wannabe.

Even though you CAN do this, you may not provide enough power to the vid card by doing so. I'd get the adapter to convert 20 to 24 and try it. If you seem to have a problem with system stability, get a new, strong PS with a 24-pin connector.

the power supply you have now is fine for that video card you have

just use what you have

you don't need a converter, it'll plug into it just fine, just line it up properly as ghost said

<<<<<<---- El-cheapo

do it.......... dont do it........ aarrrrghhhh........I hate spending money.

I just bought a 350watt 24pin enermax. Seems to be working good cost me 80$ canadian.

Thanks for the advice peeps. Oh and just so everyone knows I did try plugging the 20pin in the 24pin MB connector, and the board boots, but i just didnt feel comfortable running my new baby that way.

The new power supply was worth it guys, just for the sata power connectors, plus the old 400watt, was nothing special...some generic brand. Also, the new enermax has a fan controller for its dual fans which is nice.
