Extreme choke and stall times with RR cable....please help...

Post by eupy »

For the past 4 months I've had cable its been doing this... About every 10 minutes or so, sometimes much less, my cable just stops working. The stop usually only lasts about 20-40 seconds, but its extremely frustrating. I have called RoadRunner time after time, and they have no clue...figures. Also, recently, I've been getting about 50-100 choke to every game server I connect to. I don't get whats going on, any help would be VERY, VERY appreciated.

Thanks.

Are you using an internal one-way modem?

If you are useing a internal Network Interface card ( NIC ) Sounds Like it is going bad. Or you need to rebuild your TCP/IP Protocol. This will help sometimes to. Plus if you have a Extra Nic try changing it. This may be the problem. Just a couple of things .I can think of that will cause this. I am sure someone else will give you some more suggestions to help you out. ;)

I would recommend rebuilding your TCP/IP protocol, or removing all tweaks and starting over.

I had a similar problem like this a few weeks ago. Turns out I had "Over Tweaked" my registry :) All my Registry tweaking had screwed up something which cause my RR to be very unreliable with lots of stalls. You can try using the Default Registry patch in the Speedguide patches section, and if that doesn't improve things, try rebuilding the TCP/IP protocol. I did both of these things and my cable has been problem-free since.

Hope this helps.

I'm not really good with technology and don't know how to rebuild my TCP/IP protocol. Can anybody give me directions or something? It would really help because my cable modem freezes every couple minutes and freezes for a couple minutes at a time so I decided to just unhook it and use my 56k modem.

Go here and read "How to Install the TCP/IP Protocol" http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q138/7/89.ASP

First remove tcp/ip
start/settings/control panel/network. Highlight tcp/ip, click remove.

Read what i posted here

http://forums.speedguide.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=2&t=012474

Basically i wrote if you had installed any tweaks
It may have some registry strings your connection isn't fond of
Restore your registry back to normal and test out your downloads, see if problem goes away
If so then you'll know where the problem lies

Before you do anything, I would make sure it is'nt the amp down the street first. Make the cable comp. come out and verify that the amp is calibrated correctly and check at your tap. I had a problem thats sounds just like what you are going through. I had to get insane with them but they finally came out and fixed the amp. Dont talk to the people who answer the phone, instead insist on speaking to a supervisor, once I finnally talked to the super it was fixed in 45 min.

Thanks for the help. I hope one of the solutions work to help fix it. I just can't stand the slow speed of 56k much longer.

I had the same problem with RR, it was very frustrating to be knocked off games because of the interuption of service. So I decided to get DSL. The day I signed the contract to beging the process to get DSL, the cable suddenly, after months of problems, started working flawlessly. The cable company must have fixed something like an amp (per another post). My DSL company went bankrupt and now I am back with RR. Works great, but my upload was twice as fast with DSL. My download with cable is twice as fast as DSL. Oh well.
So my guess is your problem lies with RR. Good luck.
