How Can I Change WAV File Length ????

Post by schlemy »

Hi everyone !!.....I'm hoping someone might be able to help.

I'm trying to have my personal wav file play during the start up of Windows XP. I have it playing, but it cuts off after about 15 sec. Is there any way that i can alter the settings, so that it plays a longer wav file.

Thank You

There are other methods to get a long wav file to run at startup, check out the link below for a variety of ways. One way is to put the wav file in the Start>Programs>Startup Folder.

Here's another solution.

After having Microsoft look into the issue - the problem does not seem to be Service related either.
Rather - the limitation seems to be based more upon the *size* of the file, as opposed to the length.
My original WAV file was 38 seconds long, and about 7.4 MB in size. If I saved it as a Compressed WAV file, it was still the same 38 seconds long - but it was now about 3.2 MB in size - and it played properly.
So, they are aware of the limitation, and have confirmed that it does not affect any other System Events other than the Startup Sound - and have forwarded the issue to the product development team.
Thanks to everyone who tried to help!

Have you tried playing other sounds that are longer in length at Windows Startup.
If so, then have you played the file fully - checked it actually runs?

Norm - I tried it in the "Start" folder and it works that way. I was hoping to be able to do it without the sight of a media player showing.

Compressed wav file ?? - Does this mean an MP3 or can you compress a wav file so that it remains a wav file (but only smaller) ?

Blaine - I have only tried to use the wav file that I want to use, and it will play entirely, when it's played through a media player...(such as Real Player, Winamp, etc.)

If the problem is the size rather than the length...The file that I want to use is 10.3mb as a wav file

Google works wonders, you should spend some time learning how to use it.
Everything you ever wanted to know, and some.

It's faster than waiting for forum replies too :)

Ahhhh....Sarcasm....How I love thee :p

Actually, I did try doing a "Google" search on compressing wav files, but all I got were pages and pages of converting wav to mp3, etc., etc.

..basically, I've been hoping for a solution, where I could alter the registry so that a wav file, playing when Windows starts up, doesn't get cut off at approx. 20 sec.

I've been trying to search everywhere...In all different types of "Windows Forums" and I guess I was hoping for a quicker fix. (Silly me)

There seems to be plenty of intelligent "posters" in these forums... So I figured, this would be my next course of action. Like I said, you're suggestion on placing it in the "Start" folder did work, so I might just try leaving it at that.

...after I try using the Sound Recorder

Thanks

If you get it working, let us know so that it will be available for the next google searcher.

You can also make a shortcut to your wav file, and then edit the properties of the shortcut so that the media player opens minimized.

A batch file is another method.

Wasn't being sarcastic, I saw this post sit here for a while with no answers, so I did a search at google, and posted what I found. (I've never seen this problem before)
Thought it might help you in future.
I know it doesn't come across right in text, but that was my intention.

I was just joking with the sarcasm remark. It wasn't meant in a bad way.

I tried the Sound recorder and it worked perfectly.

I changed the original wav file from the standard 44.100 kHz 16 Bit , Stereo,
and reduced it to 32.100 kHz 16 Bit , Stereo.

It plays all 60 sec. of the file.

I've never used the Sound Recorder before, and when I was reading about it, I was kind of getting the impression that, it was going to convert it to MP3.

Thanks for all your help !! :thumb:
