DVD Burning going bad or just bad disks?

Recently my DVD burner keeps giving write errors at the same spot on all the disks. About 40% of the way through it gives a write error. This happens about 35% of the time when im burning a DVD. The media im using is Memorex DVD-R 4x. My DVD burner does support the -R. Before this started happening I went through a whole pack of 50 memorex +R with no problems. I havn't tried another type of media yet, havn't had chance to go buy some.
Here is the info on the Drive.
Its a 4x speed and 2.4x RW
It does everything else too

it is using a nec chipset and acer uses them as a rebadged. it says it supports dvd-r, I'll do some more research.

have you tried burning at 2x?

have you checked for an updated firmware?

seems there are some issues with the northbridge and this burner? Esp running with a sis chipset.

what's the buffer showing before you hit that dreaded 40%

Pick up a single disc of another type of media, just to check. My burner started giving me errors, also after burning many spindles without a hitch. Despite the fact that the firmware was up to date, certain spindles of discs seem to give my burner trouble. I picked up a second one, just in case, and it worked fine. Got the spindle replaced, and it worked fine again.

I see no rhyme or reason why that would be the case, but it has happened to me.
