Hello
On checking my event viewer there are huge numbers warning messages re DHCP saying that my "computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from the DHCP Server) for the network card ...." and it keeps on saying that it was cancelled by the user???
Can anyone help/Advise?

Yes, I'm running a wireless connection with a friend living above me. It's a sorgio router - don't know if that's any help?

first we need alittle more info....1. has the PC in question been online before with this setup before and just started failing? 2.is you PC's wireless connection showing a wireless access connection? 3. Is WEP setup?

also what model # of the router/access point...

Reading your first post again are these PC's all online just giving errors in the log,, cause if your living in an apartment someone else may be trying to log onto your network giving you these errors...

I'm the only one wireless - and the network's secure - she's made sure of it.
Can i relocate the thread to the network forum?

The internet connection icon in the notification area occassionally jumps from very good connection status to unavailable for no reason - dunno if this is related?

Maybe interferance from a wireless phone. Do you have one or could be a neighbor next door?

You can safely ignore those DHCP error messages as long as you have net connectivity. It's usually a "clash" between what windows wants the router to do and what the router wants windows to do" and the router always wins because it's the "senior" networking device.

I sometimes get those errors and I just ignore them. In fact, I ignore almost all error messages in event viewer because by the time the error is recored there, the actual trouble is already done and I have either solved the issue or it was not an important issue to begin with.

As long as you are connected to the network, and all works, then no need to try to figure out those errors.

I've been wondering if zonealarm had anything to do with it - after reading some other threads on SG, but maybe not?

I get millions of error messages when I run a norton AV scan on any disk - saying that it couldn't access the file - is that a similar issue - I don't think I have any viruses - but maybe I do - not all that sure - computer seems to be working ok

Scan in Safe Mode and see if get errors scanniing. Norton should be able to scan all files except possibly the pagefile.sys.

Cheers - will try that, but can't shutdown for a while - realtime seems to be working, so hopefully I'm protected - realtime does mean that it'll be stopping me getting infected won't it?

Realtime? You mean Auto Protect? If virus definitions are uptodate, then yes, you should be protected. Note, antivirus apps do not stop all trojans (backdoor programs), but they do get most of em. If really suspect a trojan then try one of the free online scans as well as the Cleaner from http://www.moosoft.com.

Recently got hold of pestpatrol - unsing it in combination with NAV - hope that's enough really - if not then why not?
