Slow down CPU to save money?

Hi!

At the present moment I have a P4 2.53 ghz and so far as I am concerned it uses a lot of electricity. So I wonder if I can go in on BIOS settings and slow down the speed for example down to 200-600 mhz over the night when I just have it on for downloading stuff, to reduce my bills on electirity? Is that possible, would it not damage my CPU?

I also wonder if anybody knows how big the differences are between 200 mhz, 300 mhz, 1 ghz, 2ghz and so on if you are focusing on the electricity usage?

Lets say for an example: "you will spare 6 times money having a 200 mhz CPU on than a 2.53 ghz".

Thanks!

why don't you goto my computer control panel and power options so after 2 hours let's say the computer will shut off just a thought.

You could underclock i doubt that will save you money on the electric bill the processor specs have nothing do with amount of voltage or price of it on the bill of that computer..

Ya underclocking it probably wont save you a penny. turn the monitor off and goto powersettings and have the hard drive set to turn off after 30 mins or whatever of being idle.

9 times out of 10 using hibernation or standby causes nothing but problems. Do as suggested above and set your monitor to power down after a set time, your monitor is the only thing using any considerable amount of electricity.

I lock my workstation and turn off my monitor when I'm done, using the power switch on the monitor. My computers run 24/7, unless you're running dual processor rigs with many hard drives and case fans...your computer really doesn't use all that much juice...it's the CRT monitors that consume most of the juice. Even my LCD monitors I simply turn off when I'm done.
