how do u know if ur caped "modem"

i am hearin about cappin modem's how do u know if u have been caped or if ur isp in ur area does cappin? is their a usal cap speed they set?i live in vancouver WA thanx for the help

Caps, if any, depend on the provider and area.

Vancouver, Washington @home service has an upload cap of 128kbps, which is about 15-16KBps. Downloads are not capped, per se, but... Our speeds here are 450-500KBps on the very high end of the scale. You will see spikes, but average speeds from a stable server are in the 350KBps range.
I have seen 500-700KBps on occasion, but that's pretty rare, especially lately with our entire city being not very stable here lately.

be sure to use the proper abreviations
kbps = killo-bits per second
KBps = killo-bytes per second

thanx yea i know that i was slippin on the KB/s and kb/s i read a big web page that helped me on that 1 and so if it is caped thanx that sucks ... i was wanting to set up a server for a game and play it at nights "counter strike" well i guess i will still try but i dought it will work with ne more then 4-5 ppl in it at once thanx for all ur help

I'll tell you this, when you first get your cable modem, you won't be capped. It is a way for your cable company to intice you. Proably for about a month, your speeds will be pretty fast and reliable then all of a sudden, your speed will drop dramatically. That my friends is the cap. Look for it because it will eventually happen. Happened to me with Charter Pipeline. It's a farse! And the cable providers are just interested in signing as many people onto the network without having to spend any more money on upgrading. When you call to complain about your speeds, they will tell you that there is no problem. Another Lie!! Then if you call to cancel, they want to know why. When you tell them, they think your nuts and tell you that you won't find any better service than what you have with them. Another big lie!!! So my friends, the bottom line is that most cable internet connections suck and you can only pray and hope that you get a good provider that is REALLY concerned about the customer and his/her feelings!
