Please help me choose, DSL or Cable?

Im referring to all you pro's because I am just stumped :) Currently I subscribe to both Cable and more recently DSL. I use my connection primarily for online gaming. Now when I perform speed tests [various sites] with cable I am capping at approximately 2.5Mbps, where as with DSL I am getting 1.5. Cable advertises 4, DSL advertises up to 3. Anyhow, Cable being fast is not so great with online gaming, high ping times and I'm getting packet losses. With DSL, I'm getting low ping times and no packet losses. Would you sacrifice the faster speed for the little performance gain in game? Bare in mind, I do download demo's apps, so speed is also important. Which would you stick with?

Thanks in adv.

If you are a big gamer then DSL sounds like the deal for you. Although you should not be getting any packet loss and high ping times with cable, maybe you should see if there is a problem with your cable prior to getting rid of it. I have cable and it's as stable as could be.

Without getting too much into the "Which is better, Cable or DSL" arguements....you can see for yourself what is working better for you in your case.....

lets take another approach...how about upgrading your DSL to a higher speed package? Often your DSL ISP will have several different speed packages to choose from, you can often get 6 meg down pipes (usually a business grade package).

Packetloss and high ping times arent normal for cable...have it checked out.

I am using charter cable and my pings are normally about 20ms-25ms...

20-25 is normal for DSL as well as Cable...I have Comcast HSI and my times never exceed that..

DSL only for me after my brief experience with cable. But I suspect, like everything else in the world, cable quality is different depending where you live and who the provider is.

2441/642 kbps :D

If youre having problems with cable, call them and have them check into it.

I used to have Verizon DSL. Everything was OK until a couple of technicians came into my building and screwed up my phone lines. From there on I had NOTHING BUT TROUBLE. Constant disconnects, high pings, packet loss, etc. I would call Verizon DSL and tell them what happened and they would say "Call residential". I called residential and they would day "Call DSL". After a while I just gave up. When cable became available, I got it IMMEDIATELY and never looked back.

Just my experience though...

Cable!!! by far!!
DSL around here is too expensive for what little speeds they offer from any ISP and I'm sure its the same anywhere else. Cable is more stable and faster.
Cable is the way to go! :thumb: Just fix the ping issues through the provider cause thats not normal :nope:

The cable around here is far better then the DSL in my city. So I use cable. I don't upload much so slower uploads isn't much of a problem for me. ;)
