Im going AMD

Post by aagiants »

Heh, i have seen the lights. With the prescotts not doing as well as i would like, i decided on a amd 64+ 3000+. I have read a couple reviews and found that the abit KV8 Pro seems to be good. for 100$ it seems like a good value and good OC potential

Is there any other board i should be looking at that has this kind of OC options and a lot of extra features?

Oh yeah, what is a good HSF to use on this?

The new prescotts are going to run on a 1066Mhz FSB... Either way, good performance. I'm still not sold on Prescotts until I see some major heat reduction.

that's a good combo, i had a kv8-pro with a 3000+ here at 2.45GHz, faster in gaming than a P4 3.4c stock

I'm considering doing one of these rigs this fall...the nForce3-250 has caught my eye. While their nForce3-150 was rather bland in features, while equal to performance, against Via, the 250 seems to be very feature rich. Their superior integrated gig-NIC, interesting built in hardware firewall feature, most likely going to be the chipset I go with. Well, it will definitely be nForce based anyways, since I won't touch Via anymore, or SiS, if it was free, or even if I was paid.

Give the chipset a quick read...

another question i had is i see that all these boards have built in LAN. Would my rig run faster if i disabled it and used a PCI card?

heat reduction? ah screw it, but I'd rather have a P4C at 1066mhz fsb, than a prescott.

As chips bring more power the heat will go up, at some point watercooling of some sort will be the norm.

and as far as AMD goes the Nforce chip is the creme of the crop, but nvidia doesn't seem to be doing much with it, and they really need to. the sound is a plus but come on lets not sit on that.

No, most of the new NICs run integrated into the new chipsets, far superior bandwidth compared to the ancient PCI bus. That article I linked above....read it. You'll find the page on the Giga-bit LAN will answer your question with much more detail, and illustrated it well. It's not specific to nForces chipset...as most other chipsets are similar, such as Intels. But nVidia's chipset simply dominates them all in this area.

The onboard Nic on my nForce2 is always faster than the one on my Intel.
I'm gonna wait till spring or so to do an upgrade. I've been thinking of another AMD myself. The one Cat linked is sweet. :D

Oh so this isn't the case like PCI Sounds cards? (or am i wrong in assuming this too)

im leaining towards the kv8 abit. I rather not go with any of the nvidia chipset boards out yet, if there were a better brand like asus i might consider. My only concern with the kv8 is the lack of the ability to scale the mutiplier down in overclocking situations.

Do you know if Abit is going to fix this in future Bios revisions?

Asus makes a nforce2 chipset board.

In the past couple of years, there have been many quality onboard sound solutions which can rival some high end PCI sound cards. nVidia's "SoundStorm" for example. The EAX commonly found is even quite strong, both besting the top sound boards from just 2 years ago in quality.

A few years ago, "Integrated" used to be associated with super el-cheapo components, onboard sound which rivaled a 9 dollar clock radio with the music quality of a 9 dollar clock radio underwater in a fish tank, sluggish graphics, and icky realtek onboard LAN. Not necessarily the case anymore....onboard solutions have grown to quite respectable components.

Gigabyte now has an nforce 250 chipset, socket 939 motherboard available for purchase.

It's the only one im aware of right now..I went with a via chipset(939) and have had no issues, though i prolly would have gone nforce if it had been available. Then again, they want 240$ or so for it and if thats any indicator, ill be just fine-

This is wut u should do
Go with an Abit NF7-S Motherboard There wonderful!!! Overclock nearly as good as a DFI lanparty and much more reliable.
One of these 2400,2500,2600 Mobile
Oc to like 2.5-2.8ghz
:)
But if you got the dough go with 64bit.I would love a 64bit setup.

Kyle is saying the VIA chipset for the Athlon 64's are the cat's meow. And they will be the only one to offer AGP AND PCI-E on the same board.

I doubt it...but the true answer depends on:
1) Which motherboard you're talking about, with which onboard sound, and
2) Which old PCI card you might be slapping in there to compare against.

I'll put my money 100% on the new nForce platform when it's out.

While it's a nice feature for those who might do a partial upgrade to remain on a budget, wether it will indeed remain the only one to offer the dual bus remains to be seen, and even if so, it isn't a deal breaker for me, as if I'm going the upgrade, I'll be doing the upgrade 100%.

Yeold IE
my audigy gamer and a nvidia 250gb onboard sound

also what is better to use, an ATA controller or the onboard chip
(i have heard this both ways, and asking about sounds makes me ponder about this as well)

thanks for all your help guys

I've yet to personally experience, or even read about in detail, what the nForce3 250's onboard SATA controller will be. If it's anything like what Intel did with the 865/875...then heck, nothing can beat the onboard. I have read it will be built into the single core logic controller (as is their LAN)....which will be excellent! So the onboard will be the way to go.

As for their sound, I haven't read confirmations as to wether it will be or will not be on the nf3 250. If not, looks like you'll be plopping your Audigy in there.

Oh, comparing PATA to SATA? Pretty much no difference in performance when comparing the common 7,200rpm drives of each. SATA has much more potential down the road when faster drives come out, but current drives don't bog down yet under even PATA. One exception being the Raptor drives...which only come in SATA flavor. Other makers are sure to follow soon with their own 10k drives I'm sure.
