Making WinXP child-friendly..

Post by ReLL iZ HeLL »

I have a 6 year old daughter who loves using our computer. To play games, browse internet websites, you know.. all that kiddy stuff. The problem is, I have Norton Personal Firewall and she doesn't know what to do when she gets those pop ups. She just clicks yes or no, not knowing if it could cause damage or something. What I'd like to know, is how would I set it up so that she wont get any of those prompted questions or any pop ups. Same with Internet browsing. I don't want her to be able to download files, or do anything a child shouldn't do on the net.

How do you guys have your internet explorer options setup for your kids?

TIA

? for ya .....

why not just set her up her own account where she cant save files .... like a guest account ?

the she can surf and play without the risk to you .....

of course I am sure you have set up your restriced sites etc ....

just an idea ...

I would think that you could take care of the saving/manipulating files and websites thing with IE, and a solid pop-up blocker would, as it'd say, get rid of the pop-ups.

I use Norton Internet Security. It has a well updated blacklist of bad urls, a built in pop-up blocker and a firewall. You can set up accounts (levels of security) based upon the WIN XP user accounts based on Adult, Teenager and Child.

It's not exactly my favorite piece of software, but if configured properly it doesn't interfere with a power user, and it does a good job filtering out the bad stuff.

Why not just manually edit your HOSTS file to deny all sites except for X, Y, and Z?

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

I'll combine all your recommendations and try them all at once.

Thanks again.

I have her setup with her own account, with her name.. I used to have her with the guest acount... but she likes seeing her name when she logs on lol.
