Need help with wireless connection...

Post by Brk »

Ok.

I have a Centrino, all latest drivers.

I set up the router per recommendation here in a previous thread.

I get a pop-up on my laptop that says

"Wireless Network Connection: One or more wireless networks are available. To see a list...click here."

So I click.

A dialog box shows the active connection, then asks me for the 20-digit WEP key. I enter it, and then re-enter to confirm the key.

I click Connect.

Nothing happens, and I keep getting the pop-up saying the network is available but it will never connect.

Then I have to reenter the damned number twice again and still nothing. I have tried it with and without the "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication..." checked, nothing.

Kill the WEP, try MAC filtering. Might be a check-box somewhere that says "allow this device to connect" somewhere, if so, check it.

How do I find the MAC address for an integrated WiFi card?

Also, don't I need WEP for security?

Belarc advisor *should* disgorge that info.

WEP is one form of security. MAC filtering(router) is just as good, seeing as how unique the MAC addys are.

Can you connect if the WEP is disabled?

Finding your MAC address

Post by bobink »

If you are using a windows box:

Go to Start
Run
type in CMD
(command) on a 98 box

at the prompt type:
ipconfig/all
(winipcfg on a 98 box)

this will display all of your TCP/IP settings including your MAC address

Hope that helps.

Are you using a Linksys router?
Are you using the Administrator account?
I had the same problem with my Linksys WAP under a user account that I gave full Admin priviliges, but when I tried setup under the actual Administrator account it worked fine.
